2010 Miss America Pageant Puts the Spotlight

On National Judges
Saturday, January 30, 2010

Live from Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas, on TLC

Linwood, N.J., December 7, 2009 - The 2010 Miss America Pageant promises to be an exciting event with the announcement of the strikingly diverse panel of national judges. This year's panel of seven esteemed judges includes a Miss America turned opera singer and philanthropist; an accomplished actress; an Olympic gold medalist; a six-time Grammy nominee; the most listened-to radio talk show host in America; a successful comedian, and an American Idol finalist. They will evaluate the contestants from the preliminaries through the final night of competition, which will be premiering live from Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 8:00PM ET live/PT tape-delayed, exclusively on TLC.

The judges were announced by Sam Haskell, III, Chairman of the Board for the Miss America Organization (MAO), Art McMaster, President and CEO of MAO, and Anthony Eaton, Producer of the 2010 Miss America Pageant. This year's panel of judges is comprised of experts in each of the fields that a young woman must excel in, in order to be named Miss America. Miss America must be talented, intelligent and well-spoken, a leader, have a commitment to her community, be contemporary in her style and fashion - a relatable and individual 'it girl' who can connect with today's modern woman, as well as being physically fit. To determine who will be Miss America 2010 the following panel of judges has been selected:

From the Field of Beauty - Vivica A. Fox - Fox is an accomplished actress and producer that has appeared on both the small and big screens in every type of genre. She is currently the host of the new reality series, "The Cougar," and returned for the 2009 season of Larry David's HBO hit comedy, Curb Your Enthusiasm as the feisty "Loretta Black." She is the recipient of numerous awards including the NAACP Spirit Award, the NAACP Image Award and Prism Award, the Trumpet Award for Outstanding Career Achievements in Film, the Lady of Soul Lena Horne Career Achievement Award and an MTV Movie Award. She was also named as one of People Magazine's fifty most beautiful people.

From the Field of Community Service - Miss America 2002 Katie Harman - Since her year, Harman tours nationally and internationally as an acclaimed classical and operatic vocalist with a myriad of opera and musical theater companies, symphony orchestras, and special events. Also a recording artist and television personality, she can next be seen in a principal role as a singer on HBO's Big Love (airing March 2010). An active cancer advocate, she serves on numerous boards of cancer organizations and hospitals and is the National Spokesperson for the Touched by Cancer Organization. Additionally, her philanthropic efforts target women's issues, homelessness, and arts education.

From the Field of Fitness - Shawn Johnson - Johnson is an 2008 Olympic gold medalist for gymnastics. She was named the 79th Amateur Athletic Union Sullivan Award recipient, one of the most prestigious honors in amateur sports and became the youngest ever contestant and season eight champion on ABC's Dancing with the Stars. Johnson is also involved in programs that promote healthy nutrition and exercise and help build good character amongst youth across the country.

From the Field of Talent - Dave Koz - Koz is a six-time Grammy nominee, multi platinum pop instrumentalist. Recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Koz hosts an afternoon radio show that's nationally distributed on the Smooth Jazz Radio Network as well as the syndicated Dave Koz Radio Show, now in its 15th year and airing on weekends in approximately 120 markets. I doubt anyone cares about Miss America anymore. It's not on network TV any more and it's not in Atlantic City any more so my friends aren't chaperones and the parade doesn't march down the Boardwalk and we can't yell "Show us your shoes".

The corporate headquarters are still here in my town of residence, Linwood, NJ. Rush Limbaugh? ACK!!!! I cannot will not watch the pageant with Rush involved.

Logically, I think that he has as many rights as anyone else. Just cause I think he is a bloviating piece of Sh## and bad for America. However, emotionally, get that trailer trash away from my TV and off of my pageant.

I sent them any e-mail registering my dismay.

So what do you think? Am I nuts?

I had trouble with it, too sooz.

Pic - Nah, I don't think people watch them too much any more. I liked Miss America because it was here and a lot of my friends were chaperones and I had fun with it. They moved off of network TV on Labor Day weekend which extended the summer for the shore and onto cable TV at the end of January. That is definitely NOT a prime time ratings bonanza.

I think Trump has some minimal success with the Miss USA/Miss Universe pageants.

I can't figure it out ~ I'm sure it's something to do with the "centering" command ~ but I can't seem to remove
that command without removing all formatting [which I don't want to do] ~ let's hope FF can figure it out ~

BTW, I'm guessing less and less people watch ~ hopefully, most people today find it demeaning to "crown" someone and shower them with expensive gifts/rewards simply based on their looks, particularly with today's "surgical enhancements" ~ it certainly sends a very wrong message to young people, girls especially, that looks are what count in life ~ I haven't watched in years, and contracting Rush Limbaugh as a judge guarantees I will not watch again this year ~

Miss America was supposed to be the well rounded one. Rewarded for intelligence and talent, etc too. I would love to believe it was because of discounting the superficial that caused the downfall of pageants, but I don't.

Now just about everything values the superficial.

You're right that most things DO [at least superficially~ Image] value the superficial ~ I am in a constant battle with my 14yo niece about what's important ~ she really is a good kid and I'm sure that some of her words and behavior around me are because she's playing me ~ but I refuse to let it go unchallenged ~

They left one thing out under the "From the field of communication" : Rush Limbaugh did not serve in the military due to having a cyst on his ass.

I heard the cyst went to the ER and asked if they could please remove Rush because he was an embarrassing lump spewing poison.

Also, his peace prize nomination was a joke, submitted by some other right-wing nut trying to make fun of Al Gore's nomination, if memory serves me.

No offense (unless deserved) to anyone who might be reading this, but nowadays the only people interested in these silly "beauty" pageants are the same people who are likely are drawn to oversimplified, reactionary politics...hence Limbaugh's name showing up in the above piece.

I hasten to add that a counterexample of the above is my granddaughter, who was entered (against my advice) in such a pageant. Apparently this is a bigger thing in southern states than it is up here. Although clearly the most beautiful and talented young lady in that pageant or any other pageant, she came in second to an older girl with political connections in high places. During the question/answer part of the proceding, she named, as her favorite person in the world, "My grampa...because he helps me catch toads." So obviously these pageants are not all bad.

I would say the Carrie Prejean D'affaire would counter your assertion on Religious Righties like Beauty Pageants.

Gay men along with fashionistas like beauty pageants.

It may be that my impressions of beauty pageants and the people who care about them are based on incomplete information.

Now I may be wrong, and I usually am, but I think it was brilliant adding rush to the judges. At least as far as increasing the viewership. How many sheep follow rush? Will they now look forward to seeing him being a judge in the pageant? I think it will increase the folks that watch it.

I remember as a child looking forward to the MAP... The women were beautiful and talented. And nothing was FAKE on them. Now they so many are made of plastic.

Maybe they should start a "Miss All-My-Parts-are-Original America" pageant...

I dated a guy in college, and his sister was into pageants. (So I usually find myself watching Miss America, or at least checking in through the evening. It hasn't been the same since they let Bert go.)
Let me just say, she was beautiful and sweet and she put a lot of effort into it- especially her voice lessons. Actually generated a bit of controversy- the Miss NJ folks would NOT let her sing in spanish. ("Besame Mucho") Poor thing had rehearsed that song for years!

Sooz- the evening wear & swimsuit stuff accounts for a very small part of their score overall.

I can't remember how long ago it was that I last watched a beauty pageant but it's been a very long time. I don't like then anymore than I like watching all the different parades on New Years Day. I'd rather read a good book.

I'd settle for a bad book, if a good one weren't handy.
