Cablevision lost two of my channels, Food Network and HGTV, because they couldn't come to an agreement with the networks owner, Scripps. Apparently, Time-Warner is having trouble coming to an agreement with Fox (and other companies) to continue carrying their content (no great loss there). So if you wake up today and find that some of your channels have gone blank, this may be why:

Time Warner Cable Loses Viacom: MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central To Go Dark

RYAN NAKASHIMA | December 31, 2008 11:20 PM EST | AP

LOS ANGELES - Millions of cable TV subscribers might see more than a dozen channels from MTV to Comedy Central go dark at a minute past midnight Wednesday if a dispute over carriage fees between Viacom Inc. and Time Warner Cable Inc. spills into the new year.

Time Warner, the nation's second-largest cable operator, proposed an increase in what it pays for Viacom's channels, but the offer was rejected as "a pittance," said Viacom spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew.

High-level phone talks continued Wednesday night.

The impasse, coming at the end of a three-year contract, threatened to blank out shows such as "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "The Colbert Report" to about 15.7 million subscribers to Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, an affiliate for which it negotiates programming deals.

Time Warner Cable serves 13.3 million people in New York state, the Carolinas, Ohio, Southern California and Texas; Bright House has 2.4 million customers in Michigan, Indiana, California, Alabama and Florida.

Time Warner Chief Executive Glenn Britt on Wednesday called Viacom's demand for a 12 percent increase in fees _ an extra $39 million on top of the estimated $300 million it pays Viacom annually _ extortion and outrageous given the recession. Viacom countered that the requested increase amounted to an extra $2.76 annually per subscriber. (cont)

It may be time to ditch the cable and sat TV providers (and save some money) and just watch TV over the internet where it's still free.

Edit: I just noticed that the article is dated 2008. Oops! But, as of this morning, Time Warner is still in negotiations to try and keep Fox. And I still have two blank channels on my TV...

Well that sucks.

We realized early this morning that several of our channels have moved, not sure if any vanished yet. We'll have to find time to click through one by one and see what the heck is going on.

Related question: Why can my cable company send me a special message every time there's a WWF pay-per-view event coming up, but there's never a notice about changes like this? Grrrrr!

They usually put it in teeny tiny print on their TV guide channel so you can be sure to miss it.

Fox, Time Warner Cable announce broadcast deal
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - The Fox television network and Time Warner Cable on Friday announced an agreement in principle on a television programming deal that allows signals to continue for millions of cable subscribers.

Fox had threatened to force Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks to drop the Fox broadcast signal from 14 of its TV stations and half a dozen of its cable channels as a contract expired at midnight Thursday.

But signals were extended into Friday as talks continued, allowing more than 6 million cable subscribers in New York, Los Angeles, Orlando, Fla., and other markets to watch college football bowl games and other programming.

A statement from Fox and Time Warner Cable said the deal includes Bright House.

"We're pleased that, after months of negotiations, we were able to reach a fair agreement with Time Warner Cable - one that recognizes the value of our programming," said Chase Carey, deputy chairman at News Corp., which owns Fox.

The negotiations had left some football fans wondering whether they would have access to the Sugar Bowl game, a matchup between highly ranked Florida and Cincinnati that's scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. EST.

Those worries are over, Time Warner Cable Inc. Chief Executive Glenn Britt said.

"We're happy to have reached a reasonable deal with no disruption in programming for our customers," he said in the statement.

The statement did not give details on the agreement. Fox has said it wants to be paid $1 per cable subscriber each month for the broadcast signal it now gives away freely from the stations it owns. Other Fox affiliate stations that are owned by different companies have already cut deals to be paid by cable operators for a fraction of that fee.

Fox had said it can no longer give away its stations' signals because the network is facing stiff competition from cable channels, such as the Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN, which earn subscriber fees on top of advertising dollars.

That dual revenue stream allowed ESPN to outbid Fox for high-priced events such as the college football Bowl Championship Series - including the Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Orange Bowl that are now on Fox - from 2011 to 2013.

Time Warner Cable, in the meantime, had vowed to hold the line on cable bill increases, and said the vast of majority of viewers who went to its Web site, http://www.rolloverorgettough.com, urged it to "get tough" and fight back higher costs.

Neither side would have fared well if signals had been pulled.

Fox would have lost viewers and advertising dollars for some highly anticipated shows this month, including the 20th anniversary special of "The Simpsons" on Jan. 10, and the season premieres of "American Idol" on Jan. 12 and "24" on Jan. 17. It urged viewers to go to its Web site, http://www.keepfoxon.com.

If the signal had been dropped, cable operators could anger customers, who can switch to competitive television providers such as DirecTV or AT&T's U-verse that carry Fox programming. Satellite TV provider Dish Network, which already has a deal with Fox, has been heavily advertising in newspapers, radio and TV telling Time Warner Cable customers, "Don't risk missing your favorite shows."

I don't have Time Warner, but my provider (Comcast) does their share of channel shuffling too. Usually I do get notices in advance, they just tuck them in with the bills, or since I started doing e-bills, they just send channel changes on a postcard. I don't really care much, since I don't watch many channels anyway. I'd have to get the basic cable just to get the regular networks, and once I do the whole bundle for internet and phone service (internet being the pricey one that I won't give up since I won't switch back to Verizon for landlines because of how badly they screwed up with getting my service turned on when I moved here, so that pretty much eliminates both dial-up and DSL as options), the digital cable adds very little to the monthly cost, so it's worth it for the once in a while I want to watch one of those few extra channels on it. But, if the prices go up, I won't hesitate to go back to just basic cable. As long as I have the internet service, I can always hook up a computer to the TV and play movies through Netflix (or any other online source).

No cable, no satellite and only rabbit ears - life is grand. As long as we can watch a bit of hockey via the internet we're quite happy.

Scripps urges support for Food Network
Published: Jan. 2, 2010 at 1:29 PM

MINEOLA, N.Y., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Scripps Networks Interactive, engaged in a food fight Cablevision, says the U.S. cable group's customers should demand it keep the Food Network on its TV menu.

Scripps said on its Web site that Cablevision customers will no longer get to watch network shows such as "Ace of Cakes" and "30 Minute Meals," or Food Network specials like "Worst Cooks in America."

Scripps said Cablevision customers should voice their opposition to the Food Network decision by calling 866-695-BEST or by sending an e-card to Cablevision.

The distribution contracts for the Food Network and HGTV expired New Year's Eve. More than 120,000 calls have already been received in support of returning the networks to the air, Scripps said.

Cablevision maintains Scripps did not offer "reasonable" terms for renewing the distribution contracts.

"We are sorry that Scripps's current financial difficulties are making it impossible for them to continue our relationship on terms that are reasonable for Cablevision and our customers," Cablevision said in a release. "We wish Scripps well and have no expectation of carrying their programming again, given the dramatic changes in their approach to working with distributors to reach television viewers."

Yeah, Cablevision's been running that spiel on the two affected channels since 12:01am on Friday morning. Since I'm not the one paying for the service (my sister is and it is included in my rent) I'm just wondering how much extra we may be charged for these channels if Scripps and Cablevision finally come to an agreement. The other thing is, I'm still trying to get a box so I can get the digital channels that were dropped off last Feb. during the changeover from analog to digital.

So is the Food Network off the air? I don't have cable so I don't know what's going on...
