Martin Luther King, Jr is one of my personal heroes ~ one of the "perks" of working with a charter elementary school that is 99% black has been learning more about him specifically and many other outstanding, compassionate, ethical, proud humans who happened to be black ~ I was lucky to spend almost an hour several months ago with the granddad of one of our scholars ~ he had worked for 7 years with Dr King and, in fact, was standing on the balcony maybe 5' away when Dr King was murdered ~ talking with him, hearing his views and his hopes and his disappointments, was a true honor ~

I salute Dr King ~ and all the others who believe, and are working to prove, that "all men [and women] are created equal" ~ Image ~ so much has been accomplished, but there is still a long road to travel ~

I agree with gramps that the kidlets are lucky to have sooz around. I also agree with sooz that she's the really lucky one to have them in hers.

MLK was one of the greatest champions fighting for our Constitution, a great American hero.

My daughter and her girlfriend, age 11, wanted to celebrate their holiday by going to the mall, hitting the yogurt stand, and seeing a movie. The girlfriend's mom, who is way more crunchy than me, decided that they needed to do a little community service first. So she called around and found a restaurant that would let them set up a table to collect some money for UNICEF. The friend made some valentine greeting cards, got them printed at Kinko's and sold 51 of them for $2.50 each. My daughter made brownies, and instead of charging a price for them she offered them in exchange for any donation. The girls make $330 for UNICEF and never did get to the mall or the movie. I wasn't sure what they learned about MLK in the process, but it is a nice illustration of that quote.

That's wonderful, queen. I love the idea of celebrating MLK with community service. Maybe they didn't learn about MLK, the man. They did learn his philosophy. That's the important thing.
