I believe Obama did a masterful job last night in his first SOTU address, both in content and in delivery ~ some, like John McCain, will belittle the speech with "blame it on Bush" comments ~ I saw Obama's remarks NOT as excuses, but as explanations of the reality gwb left behind when he rode off into the sunset ~ in context, Obama has accomplished much in what he himself identifies as a "difficult year" ~ there was something for virtually everyone, including direct challenges to Congress as a whole ~ there were several comments that made me cheer out loud ~ and I laughed whenever the cameras [I was watching NBC] panned to Boehner and Cantor [sitting together] ~ both looked horribly constipated ~ Image ~ Sooz

I didn't listen to it. Everyone I have talked to this morning did tune in, however, and all said it was terrific. Most of the reporting I've read this morning pretty muuch agrees it was an excellent address, though the professionally conservative blogger/commentators said it was a good speech promoting bad policies. I like it that he scolded people who needed it. I think the tv audience will respond positively to that. I like it that he didn't retreat on health care or anything else, except maybe offshore oil drilling. When I listened to excerpts this morning, he sounded sort of conversational, more so than I remember from other speeches. I hope the audience was huge and will turn out to be receptive.

Good speech.  I didn't bother watching it because I get nothing out of hearing speeches (very short attention span Image) but I figured you would post the complete transcript.  Thanks, Sooz.

I watched it on CNN's live stream... there were a lot of Republicans who seemed to have cold hands. They were sitting on them most of the night.

it was a VERY confrontational and adversarial speech.  i think it played well to Democrats, and poorly to Republicans.  that was probably what he intended.

That pretty much sums it up as far as intent goes. I think he needed to do it though, especially where he talks about the "super majority" in the senate. If the Republicans are so eager to use it, they should be prepared to shoulder some of the responsibility for governance. They can't expect to "Just say NO!" and think people won't get frustrated and angry. This past year has been very revealing... we can clearly see who wants to forge ahead and do the difficult work and who wants to just play it safe in order to secure another term in office.

yes, and he did say "IF". all of the hue and cry over this comment is for naught. what he is saying is that if the GOP wants to bring everything to a grinding hault, that is their prerogative. but they have to assume the blame for it. that is not debatable, imo. it is a stone cold fact.

They won't assume the blame when it's just as easy to point the finger at the White House and all the repubnocan bobble-heads slap each other on the back and say "yeah... it's HIS fault!" That's what they've been doing and judging by the cold reception Obama's speech got from them, there's every reason to suspect they'll continue with more of the same. I don't expect the public to see it any differently... they'll just go along with what the repubnocans say because the repubnocans have tapped into their anger and they're exploiting it for all it's worth.$$$$$$$$$$$$$

it may be his fault for what is done, but it is NOT his fault for things that are NOT done. that is what the message was. and i think it was fairly clear.

My dh was actually yelling at the TV.."CALL 'EM OUT!!! CALL 'EM OUT ON THEIR BULL%$#!!!!!!" Image

The whole stand/applaud/sit thing really has always made me cringe, though. I mean, I get it, but it reminds me of a religious service in a creepy way.
I was thrilled to see that Obama managed to eliminate the "ummmmm" that plagues so many of his other talks.

I was happy to agree with most of what he said, and happy to disagree on a few points. As a tree-hugger, I thought the "clean energy/climate change" thing might lead to some comments on other environmental issues, but I guess there's only so much time.
