Could be entirely coincidental, but I woke up about 400a this morning, which is very unusual for me ~ Sooz

Rare earthquake rattles northern Ill.; no damage
Associated Press

CHICAGO – A small pre-dawn earthquake has hit northern Illinois, startling residents as far away as Michigan and Iowa, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 3.8-magnitude earthquake hit about 45 miles northwest of Chicago at 4 a.m. Wednesday. Scientists say the epicenter was in Kane County.

The USGS initially reported the magnitude as 4.3 but later downgraded it. USGS geophysicist Amy Vaughan says such quakes are rare in northern Illinois.

She says residents in Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan also reported feeling the quake.

In Kane County, sheriff's dispatchers were overwhelmed with calls, and several residential and business alarms were triggered. But spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler says no injuries or damage have been reported.

Does this mean Chicago is going to fall into Lake Michigan?  Image

It may well have awakened you, sooz.  I've always been much more sensitive to earthquakes in the middle of the night - We generally don't feel many here in Sacramento unless they are pretty big, though.  I was only about 45 miles from San Francisco when the Loma Prieto quake hit, and didn't feel it at all, while other people there said they could see the ground rising and falling as the shockwaves moved through.

If Chicago falls into Lake Michigan, I'll be one of the first in the water ~ the lake IS my backyard, quite literally ~ the east side of my building was originally designed to accommodate boat moorings ~

True story ~ when my former boss was still firm-wide managing partner, he traveled to each of our offices every quarter ~ we have both a LA and a SFO office, which meant at least one overnight ~ he always tried to make it just ONE overnight because he was so leery of earthquakes ~ well, he was in LA and I was on my way to work one morning when the news said there had been a 5.0 earthquake in LA a couple of hours earlier ~ as soon as I got in the office, a bit before 800a [central time], I called the hotel ~ soon as he said "hello", I said "you okay?" ~ he was a bit groggy because I had awakened him, and he asked "yeah, why wouldn't I be?" ~ I started to laugh ~ then I told him that after all the years of fearing being in California during an earthquake it had finally happened ~ and he slept thru it!

It's a spooky feeling, isn't it? I lived on the top floor of a 10-storey building when a 4.9 hit. It was wierd because I had tile floors and as they were moving left and right (along with the table) and my office chair was staying put. Really strange....

I had that happen too, a long time ago. I was sitting and had that feeling you get when you had too much to drink. I figured I should really hurry to get to the bath room when it hit me that I didn't drink anything, and why is that chandelier swaying?
Turned out it was the Friaul earthquake with a magnitude of 6.something. I was on the 9th floor in one of the athlete buildings from the '72 Olympics (Olympics have a nice effect on the housing market btw) and it swayed quite a bit.
