I was saying that I am going to see Steve Winwood for Valentine's Day.  In looking around for info I found that he was #33 on Rolling Stone's greatest 100 singers list.  After looking at the list, I don't actually think it's a greatest singers list at all.  Maybe vocal artists. For example, I don't think Bob Dylan sings well at all, but he's a great vocal artist.

Take a look at the list and let me know what you think.

First of all they aren't all rock singers.

It's a great list and I agree with the differential between "singer" and "vocal artist" ~ the selected song is not necessarily my favorite by that specific artist in several cases ~ there are some that I consider "great" that are not on the list ~ and there are a couple on the list I've never heard of ~ Image ~ I'll give this some thought and try to come up with specifics ~

oskar, the artists may not all be "rock singers", but they all rose to "stardom" during the "rock era", which is basically mid/late 50s to today ~ and the listed songs of the non-rock singers were pretty much crossovers to the pop charts ~

No, they aren't all rock singers.  On page 102 of the link they showed their panel of experts and here were their instructions.

Voters
Each voter was asked to list his or her 20 favorite vocalists from the rock era, in order of their importance. Those ballots were recorded and weighted according to methodology developed by the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, which then tabulated and verified the results for Rolling Stone.

Lennon would not have made the list for me. he is one of the 10 most gifted songwriters and lyricists of the modern age, but his voice is just passable, imo.

i am really pleased that Howlin' Wolf made the list.

Patsy Cline should have been way way closer to the top.

actually, i should have said that Lennon would not have made the top 50 for me. maybe somewhere around 75.

also noted that Paul Simon is not on that list, but Art Garfunkel is, and that NONE of the CSN guys are there.  criminal.

When it comes to rock singers I think I'd have to go with Joe Cocker.

If we're talking pure "rock singers", the gravelly voices of both Joe Cocker and Rod Stewart give "grit" to the rock genre ~ the Eagles would be my choice for "rock group" [at least today ~ Image] ~

I'm more surprised by who's not on the list than who is on it. Bryan Ferry, Peter Gabriel, Leonard Cohen, Grace Slick, Barbara Striesand, Deborah Harry, to name just a few....

That's because I don't think it's actually a singer's list. Streisand, no matter if you like her or not, is a great singer.

agreed.  and the list said "of the rock era" not "rock".

If you showed me this list without saying anything about it and asked me what it was, the most I would be able to say it that they are all singers from the past 50 years or so. Nothing more.

I think it's a strange list.

hahahaha.

you know, it is interesting, John. a good singer is not necessarily the same thing as a good vocalist.

ie- i think Bob Dylan is a horrible vocalist, but he sings well. by that i mean that it fits with what he does.
Tom Petty = ditto.
David Thomas = ditto.
Frank Zappa = ditto.
Richard Hell = ditto.
actually, i could name a couple dozen like that, and at least half of them are on this list.

Exactly! So I don't know what this list is meant to represent.

I like Al Stewart but I'd never say he was a great vocalist.

Someone I think was a good rock vocalist was the late Steve Marriott.

I think the list is strange.  Mac and I also have differing definitions on singing and vocalist.

Mac what do you mean by sings well?

Paul McCartney is on the list twice - Is that for before-"Paul is dead" Paul and after?

That second Paul in the list should be Steve Perry.

I guess they really were Rolling Stoners when they put the list together.

sing means to render lyrics meaningful to an audience, imo.  ie- if you are singing about buttholes, doing so operatically may not be what you are shooting for.
