What a shame! ~ my local news has a reporter in Vancouver, who just did a short segment saying the officials are considering closing that track ~ apparently it has been controversial for weeks, if not longer, with MANY athletes saying it is dangerously fast ~ and there have been a dozen crashes during training runs ~ NBC Nightly News just ran a clip of the accident ~ it is HORRIFIC ~ I feel terrible for the young man and his family ~

Luging is dangerous. Always has been and always will be. This isn't the first death in that sport.

Very sad! I'm watching the opening ceremonies now, and many athletes are wearing black arm bands (or at least those in some countries were).

Bob Costas just announced that the other luger from Georgia has withdrawn from the games ~ I feel terrible for him too ~ and I'm finding it very difficult to watch the luge qualifications ~

I read a CBC report that said the track was not to blame but that they did some modifications to slow the speeds "just in case". Now some of the lugers are complaining that it's too slow.
Go figger.

It seems to me they go into this sport knowing the risks. Making the walls higher... yeah... OK... but slowing the track? If I were and "extreme" sports enthusiast or participant, I'd be a little disappointed.

During the mens' trials last night, the announcers mentioned the runs were starting further down the track ~ 2 football field lengths further down the track ~ that, in and of itself, slows speeds ~ this track is supposed to be the fastest in the world ~ and it has created controversy since it was first used ~ as for "slowing things down", even with whatever modifications and starting lower on the track, the runs last night were in the 88-90mph range ~

USA Today has some VERY interesting inter-active graphics that I can't figure out how to c/p while preserving the inter-activity ~ but anyone interested can click the end link ~ Sooz

Whistler officials move start to slow men's luge

Officials have moved the start of the men's luge from the top of the track to curve 3, where women and skeleton racers were originally supposed to start. The change has dropped the speed of the track from above 95 mph to 90 mph.

Lugers, along with the practitioners of other extreme sports, are adrenalin junkies.
