Dick Cheney has always been leftish on the gay issue.  He has a gay daughter, and while Cheney is evil (and I don't believe in evil) he isn't stupid.

Cheney does love his daughter.  Anybody saying gays should lie about it would be on his shit list.  To him the religious argument carries no weight so it is purely practical.  True conservatives would not support the government being in the bedrooms of consenting adults and Cheney is smart enough to know that gays have served and are serving honorably and will continue to do so, even if out of the govt mandated closet.
