Nope, oskar ~ no 'gotcha' ~ when you read the longer articles, they all confirm that the DoJ investigation began months before the S&P downgrade ~ and they all note they cannot confirm whether the other ratings agencies are part of the investigation [which they obviously should be] ~ it's my understanding that this became public because S&P itself made it so ~

Could very well be ~ and I'm sure we'll learn more ~ but the Benen mini-item is on the DoJ [not SEC] investigation ~ if I had to guess, S&P went public with the info now to try and tie it into the downgrade, which it absolutely is not ~

oskar, yesterday's AlterNet email update has a blurb on an 'explosive report' on the SEC by Matt Taibbi in Rolling Stone ~ I'm going to do a thread with that, and I'm going to include the article you linked above ~ from what I'm reading, 'explosive' is exactly the right correct adjective ~ Image

"* In retrospect, Texas Gov. Rick Perry's (R) decision to cut fire-department funding by 75%, and forest-service funding by a third, probably wasn't the best of ideas."

No kidding?

* And as you've probably heard, there will be a debate tonight featuring all of the Republican presidential candidates. I'm afraid I won't be live-blogging the event, but I'll have coverage in the morning.

We should take a count of how many times we hear "cut taxes". Oh wait a minute... I won't be watching so I won't hear that message.

Today's edition of quick hits:

* Terror threat: “Federal and local officials tightened security Friday in New York and Washington as investigators probed a possible al-Qaeda plot to detonate a vehicle-borne bomb around Sunday's 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. After U.S. officials received word of what they called a credible but unconfirmed threat to use a car bomb in New York or Washington, police and other law enforcement agents in the two cities stepped up checks of bridges, tunnels, airports, bus and rail terminals and other sites.â€
