This is the kind of crap that must stop.

Flashback: Giffords Opponent Had M16 Shooting Event, 'Help Remove Gabrielle Giffords From Office'

Back in June 2010, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords's (D-AZ) Republican opponent Jesse Kelly had an event at which voters could shoot an assault rifle with the candidate, promoted as thus:

Get on Target for Victory in November Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly[/quote]

Late Update: Kelly has posted this statement on Twitter:

Quote:
We are all deeply saddened by this morning's shooting. Gabrielle Giffords, the other victims, and their families are in our prayers.

Late Late Update: In another example, Kelly's website had also cross-posted a local news article that carried the headline "Kelly places the crosshairs squarely on Rep. Giffords:

The link on Kelly's site was taken down today, and now simply takes the reader to his general news page. (It worked earlier today, when I took that screen grab.) However, the original article in the local paper is still up.

There's something wrong with a patriotism that, when you talk about it, it's in terms of  weapons and targets. "Watering the tree of liberty" with blood. At my brother's funeral, I was surprised to see a squad of sailors in dress uniform, performing the ritual of honoring a fallen comrade.  He'd been out of the navy for at least 25 years, as far as I know not an American Legion member.  But here were these young sailors, come to that little northern town from I don't know where to take the flag from his coffin, fold it reverently, and give it to our mom. It was the United States of America thanking her for her son's service to his nation, her country offering comfort in her grief. I'm still grateful to them and to our country for that kindness that day. And remembering when I was overseas, feeling homesick and proud to see the US flag flying at army posts, more so to see it on the day we came back, I know that our hearts are closely tied to our home countries. I think patriotism is property expressed in terms of  that gratitude and love.

Patriotism that provides just a format for expessing hostility and threats against folks one disagrees with isn't really patriotic. There ought to be no tolerance for people who think that, since they own a rifle, they are equipped to participate in the political process. Somehow it's never the blood of tyrants that the tree of liberty gets watered with, but the blood of little girls like the one in Arizona.  I guess I'm just observing about all the militias and second amendment fanatics...it's not their country that they're in love with. I don't think they deserve to call themselves patriots.

So what's the difference between Palin/Kelly and Bin Laden?
The details may be different but both are inciting terrorism.

None, oskar ~ and most troubling to me is that it extends FAR beyond just Palin/Kelly ~
