I wonder if this doofus is related to Louie Gohmert ~ Image ~ Sooz

Florida State Rep. Jason Brodeur (R) recently introduced a bill which criminalizes any “verbal or written inquiry by a public or private physician, nurse, or other medical staff person regarding the ownership of a firearm by a patient or the family of a patient or the presence of a firearm in a private home or other domicile of a patient or the family of a patient,â€

Ridiculous. And guess who supports it?...

The National Rifle Association's top Florida lobbyist and a Florida Medical Association member both say the issue is among the top priorities for the session, with the groups holding diametrically opposed positions on what doctors and their patients and families should be allowed to discuss during a medical visit.

Why would gun ownership even come up unless the patient was shot with one?  And then wouldn't that be more of a concern for the police?

It comes up when a patient expresses feelings of sadness , anxiousness , hopelessness and on further assessment endorses suicidal ideation. Then intent is explored with the patient and I'd intent thoughts as to a plan. The use of a gun for a plan if things get too hopeless can come up and the patient is asked if there is ready access to a gun. Since I work with children , teens and adults in mental health this is just an example from that experience.

And yet republicans were so dead set against government coming between a patient and their doctor... this stinks of hypocrisy.

It's the first thing the police asked me when I called them when my husband disappeared on his little jaunt last year--for just that reason.  It was also the first question the attending psychiatrist asked me when they finally brought him in two days later.

When I have to assess suicidality, we ask do you have a plan and a mechanism to carry out your plan?

I think Florida should thoroughly think about the ramifications of this bill.

IMO, the right to free speech vs. required "professional" speech is going to become an "issue" in the medical clinical area.  The hospital I work at has informed floor directors that "monitors" will be walking the halls of units, making certain that staff follows the scripted dialogue which we are to use in "hourly rounds" on the patients--the dialogue is to be used almost verbatim and little deviation will be tolerated...these eavesdroppersmonitors will then report any staff member not following the script; failure to follow the script will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination...so much for confidentiality between a patient and their caregiver. This dictated scripted dialogue is part of the Studerization that is sweeping the nation's hospitals and nurses and caregivers are not exactly thrilled with it. At our hospital we are required to wear not only the usual ID badge, but a pin which says "Ask Me about Hourly Rounding"...we are forbidden to discuss staffing even when a patient asks about it:  I used to just smile and say "We can handle anything that comes up" now I just say, "I'm not allowed to discuss staffing." So far I haven't been called on the rug for it.  IMO, the conversation between a doctor and his patient is covered under confidentiality laws and professional conduct codes and no law should dictate the discussion so long as the discussion is honest and not fraudulent./

Good grief, that sounds like Big Brother. Methinks as much as the right screams about Marxism, Communism, Socialism......THEY are the ones who will morph into the purveyors of thought control and double speak. Lord knows they have enough practice with the latter and try their best via Palin, Beck et al for the former. Image

What, no Second Amendment remedies for this First Amendment violation?

Cowards.
