Fitness guru Jack LaLanne, 96, dies at Calif. home
He exercised and ate healthy every day of his life, agent says

MORRO BAY, Calif. — Fitness guru Jack LaLanne, who inspired television viewers to trim down and pump iron decades before exercise became a national obsession, has died at age 96.

Just heard this on the news.  I think his exercise show was the granddaddy of all exercise shows.  Anyone remember watching/exercising to it?

Saw him at a Kmart once, demoing fitness gear.  Must have bee 70.  Looked like an ordinary old guy in good shape for an old guy.

He always looked well preserved to me. I think he was probably tired all the time when off camera from doing the things he promoted, like walking with your arms in full swing and scrunching your face to exercise those muscles. Image He made a good living at what he did.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the man. May he rest (finally) in peace.Image

I remember my Mom and her best friend eating tomatoes stuffed with tuna and exercising to the Jack Lalanne show (which I think was on at noon)...they'd giggle and cut up like teenagers, all the while trying to keep the flab at bay...

I remember his show- I think I was in high school when I first saw it. I remember thinking his exercises didn't seem to be too difficult- the only one I remember is one
where he held a chair over his head- not a big chair- just a standard (for those days) wooden kitchen chair.  I remember watching a clip where he was swimming off
the California coast and supposedly pulling a boat with a rope. That could have been on his 60th or 70th birthday.  I'm sure he did alright money wise but if he had been born 30 years later he'd have made much more money-
fitness was a joke with most people  when he was in his prime.

I don't remember ever seeing Jack Lalanne's show, but I did see him do guest segments on shows like Today and occasionally hawking his juice extractor and other products on late night infomercials and networks like Home Shopping Network ~  he was decades ahead of his time ~

RIP, Jack ~ Image

sort of off topic, but this reminded me of why I dislike "fitness gurus" in general

It's pretty easy to stay fit and eat properly when your career/life is in the fitness field or if you're wealthy and can afford a chef and/or a personal trainer. When you work in an office (or elsewhere) 8 hours a day/5 days a week, it's hard to be motivated or have the time for that.  The sweaty, cheerleaders like Richard Simmons, Susan Powter or any of the plethora of people who want to motivate us sort of make me, well, ill. i liked jack a lot. he started with diet, and then regular exercise. he was very fit until the end, and i think that is a goal worth striving for.

According to what I read, he had an addiction to sugar as a child which made him violent. He tried to burn his parents' house down. A doctor told him that his body was a garbage dump. He resolved to do something about that, thus sprang his career. He never drank milk and hadn't had a dessert since 1929.

For me:

I don't want to arrive at my death in a well preserved, beautiful body, but tired and worn out with a drink in one hand, a cigarette in the other shouting "Wooohooo, what a fuckin' ride!" Image
