A Norwegian judge on Monday said that there is nothing to suggest that self-confessed killer Anders Behring Breivik is insane and that there is no evidence that he had help in carrying out this past summer's rampage that left 77 people dead.

CNN reports that the judge also ordered that Breivik be held in custody for a further 12 weeks while he awaits trial, but that his access to the outside world â€“ via visits, correspondence and media access â€“ will be gradually restored during that time.

Monday's court action was Breivik's first public court appearance since the July 22 twin bombing-shooting attacks that rocked the Scandinavian nation. His previous court appearances had occurred behind closed doors.

The Associated Press reports that Breivik opened the proceeding by declaring that he was a "military commander" in the "Norwegian resistance movement." The judge, however, moved quickly to cut him off and tell him to keep his comments on the topic of his further detention.

Breivik was also denied a request to address survivors and family members of the victims of the attack, who were among the spectators on hand for the hearing to decide whether Breivik should remain in jail until his full trial on terrorism charges.

In the months since his arrest, Breivik has called his imprisonment "irrational torture." His lawyer told reporters that Breivik also refuses to acknowledge authority of the courts and is demanding immediate release.

At the hearing, Breivik confessed again to detonating a fertilizer bomb outside a government building and then shooting 69 people at a youth camp for Norway's governing Labor Party while disguised as a police officer. Still, he pleaded not guilty to terror charges on grounds that he "was in a state of war to protect Europe from being taken over by Muslim immigrants," according to the AP.

He will probably find himself in a deep dark hole once all of this is settled.
