This has long been a significant concern for Mike Ditka's foundation and became even more widely prominent following Dave Duerson's suicide earlier this year ~ if the plaintiffs win this lawsuit, there could well be enormous consequences for the NFL ~ Sooz

Ex-players blame NFL for brain injuries
Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP)

Jamal Lewis, Dorsey Levens and two other former NFL players have sued the league over brain injuries that they say left them struggling with medical problems years after their playing days ended.

Lewis and Levens, along with Fulton Kuykendall and Ryan Stewart, filed the lawsuit against the National Football League and FNL Properties LLC this week in U.S. District Court in Atlanta.

The players maintain the NFL knew as early as the 1920s of the potential for concussions to harm its players but only went public last year.

''The NFL has done everything in its power to hide the issue and mislead players concerning the risks associated with concussions,'' the players argue in the lawsuit.

NFL representatives did not immediately return phone calls Thursday from The Associated Press.

''While athletes in other professional sports who had suffered concussions were being effectively `shut down' for long periods of time or full seasons, NFL protocol was to return players who had suffered concussions to the very game in which the injury occurred,'' the lawsuit states.

The court documents say the league concealed the dangers from coaches, trainers, players and the public until June 2010, when it publicly acknowledged the health threats and warned players and teams.

The NHL is under fire for similar reasons.
Though they have done a bit about it they're still dithering around the fringes instead of facing it head on.
Gotta keep the ol' cash flow, ya know.

Anybody who plays either football or hockey and doesn't recognize the potential for brain injuries doesn't have much a brain to start with.

Unintentional.
Thing of it is that pro sports are no longer sports. They're money machines and the players are expendable pawns. Sorta like the Roman gladiators.

No question it's a huge industry. Just think of all the razzle-dazzle and bling that's sold in the arenas and on the TV's along with the "pro sport". It's unknowable whether one supports the other, but one thing is clear - the fans are the ones who ultimately pay for all of it. The fans have to decide if "team loyalty" is value for money.

Ex-players sue NFL over concussions
Associated Press

MIAMI (AP)

Nearly two dozen former NFL players are suing the league over severe and permanent brain damage they say is linked to concussions suffered on the job.

The complaint filed Thursday in Miami follows a similar one in Atlanta earlier this week. It is the latest in a series of recent lawsuits against the NFL by ex-players.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of ex-Miami Dolphins teammates Patrick Surtain, Oronde Gadsden and 19 other players. It accuses the NFL of deliberately omitting or concealing years of evidence linking concussions to long-term neurological problems.

The NFL denies the charges and says player safety has long been a priority.

The players claim the NFL made misrepresentations about the seriousness of their injuries ''with the intent of inducing NFL players, including Plaintiffs, to return to play as soon as physically possible after having suffered a football-related concussion and to promote an aggressive style of football that would attract viewers.''

According to the lawsuit, following numerous studies on the risks of concussions, the NFL created a committee of researchers and doctors in 1994 to study concussions.

The committee was supposed to be independent, but members were affiliated with the NFL, the lawsuit said, and the group did not include a doctor specializing in neurology or other brain research. When the committee published its findings in 2003, it stated ''there was no long term negative health consequence associated with concussions,'' according to the complaint.

The former players are seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.

The lawsuit notes that in 2010, the NFL replaced the leaders of its research committee, and that the new leadership described the data used in the past by the NFL to counter the long-term effects of concussions as ''infected'' and lacking in science.

If those reports are accurate I'd say the NFL is rather scrooged.
