Science Breakthroughs in 2011: Cancer Vaccines, 3-D Printing, and More
The year 2011 saw smaller batteries for electric cars, cancer vaccines, and neutrinos faster than the speed of light.
by Alison Snyder | Dec 20, 2011 4:45 AM EST

The Daily Beast rounds up the year's most provocative scientific findings, promising medical advances, and exciting technologies. From a black sludge that could transform batteries to clues about the deepest mysteries of the universe, these advances will surely provoke and propel us into 2012 and beyond. Some may lead to uncharted territory, while others may turn out to be flukes. All illustrate how science bumps up against politics, business, art, and culture to push society forward.

I love the last line too, sooz. I've tried to say that very same thing, but couldn't find the exact words.

The most exciting thing to me, outside of the cancer thing, is the 3D printing. The link they provided shows some products that aren't nearly as expensive as I imagined they would be. The fun thing is that you can create your own product. Rings or whatever. A new form of art, imo. My mind is spinning with ideas.

A Canadian team built a real, full-sized car with 3D printing.
Such a printer is very cheap compared to the cost of tools and dies.
