Gingrich's blowout win is certainly an eye-opener ~ maybe even a "warning" ~ but I'm not sure "panic" is the correct word ~ I'm also not sure that the "Republican establishment" still exists ~ I've posted repeatedly that I think the "Republican establishment" wildly miscalculated when they encouraged/endorsed/adopted the TP, assuming they could control the extremists ~ the "Republican establishment" created the TP monster and now they are paying the price ~ Sooz
Newt Gingrich's Surprise Win in South Carolina Panics Republicans
He has a lot of obstacles in his way - most notably, a lack of a decent national campaign organization and a lack of long-term discipline that's required for this kind of contest. He hasn't built a decent organization in almost a year, so I'm inclined to think he won't be able to do it in 6 or 7 weeks leading up to the March 6 primaries. If I were on Romney's team I would suggest that the best way to beat Gingrich at this point is to pick at him to the point of getting him angry and then let Newt be Newt, because he gets very ugly when he's angry. Point out all his political missteps over the years that show him to be ineffective as a political leader.
Basically, brutalize him into shooting himself in the foot. He has brought it on himself.
I should say there are plenty of people outside of Romney who wish to brutalize Gingrich, so Romney doesn't need to do it himself. He should stay mostly above it and wait for others to goad Gingrich into melting down. Romney should maintain his focus on the general election, for the most part.

i suspect he is going to kick Gingrich's ass in Florida. that should pretty much set it straight.
Yeah - I think this was a wake-up call for Romney. They waited too long to get going in South Carolina and then he was too passive last week, which allowed Gingrich to frame the campaign. Florida should be much different, becuase I think I read that Romney has already bought something like $7 million worth of ad time. He's announced he'll release his taxes on Tuesday, so that will take away Gingrich's issue there.
You don't want to be on the defensive in a campaign. Romney was there in South Carolina, so he needs to turn it around in Florida. He has a very good base to start from there.
gop, what's the effect on Republican turnout in the general election? I know some Democrats who, after the Democratic primary between Obama and Clinton, became members of the PUMA party...Party Unity, My Ass!!
gop and mac, do you think that maybe people, the voters, have gotten to the point where they just hate the attitude Romney has about money? Since most repub voters are not rich, doesn't it get a little tiring to have the crap lines Romney has said plus finding out he pays 15% tax on money he gets for basically doing nothing (by his own admission - for investments made in the past). Of course, Newt is rich, too, and even Obama does ok but it appears they actually do something for their money. Although his dad worked and was self made, Romney, shows nothing that would make me think he understands anything about what I or most people go through or has any ability to lead the effort to fix the problems. In my view, he has also shown himself to be incredibly weak by the way he has handled the attacks on his wealth.

Turnout will be fine - there's a unifying force for the Republicans, and it's named "Obama."
jeanne, obviously I'm not either of "gop and mac" ~ ~ they each can and hopefully will speak for themselves ~ but I agree with your take ~ Romney is simply not likeable ~ he seems to be totally socially inept when it comes to dealing with the general public ~ comments like "I'm unemployed, too" and claiming that $300,000+ "isn't much" and his "I'm one of you" charade come across as mocking and totally out of touch ~
right, sooz. It seems to me he honestly does not get it. He has no clue what the average person goes through when unemployed. He does seem to think the average person likes him and he thinks we feel he can help us because of that understanding. I feel maybe a lot more people are beginning to realize he is simply not in the real world and has no idea what the problems are, much less how to fix them.
Romney could be more careful about how he phrases some things, but with the level of nitpicking over every public statement that exists with agenda-driven bloggers and their followers, every candidate runs into such problems.
Romney's comment about the income from speeches was part of his explanation of why his tax rate is closer to 15% than higher - his personal income for the year, from speeches, in not much of his total income for the year because the bulk of it is apparently from capital gains. Context is everything, and making mountains out of molehills is the politics blogger's stock in trade.
I listened to Newt espousing his "family values" on DayStar (after the ex's interview re the open marriage thing--I think that's called adultery by God) and DayStar didn't even call him on it! Thought I was going to gag...the idea of listening to this creeep for months to come does cause me to gag!
I'll also add that you guys wouldn't like Romney if he only earned $10,000 per year, so you rack up as a lost cause for him and very poor judges of how the open-minded public views him.

Romney wouldn't even be a known entity if he only earned $10,000. He'd be too busy applying for food stamps.
That's bull shit and I think you know it, gop ~ for me, it has nothing at all to do with his wealth ~ as I posted earlier, there are plenty of people who leave Romney treading water when it comes to wealth ~ personally, I dislike Romney because I believe he really just does not get what is happening in peoples' lives today ~ and even more importantly, his proffered "policies" seem to prove he just does not care about that ~ and his wide-ranging dishonesty ~

Excuse me, gop, are you putting all of us in the same group? Who exactly are "you guys"? Are you considering me a "you guys?"

That's really sad. What it means is that Republicans really don't give a crap what is best for the country. They would take Saddam, Che Gueverra or Jesse James as long as it wasn't Obama.

sooz, I said you don't like him, period. It's not his wealth, or lack of it. You wouldn't like him regardless of his wealth.

Republicans generally think a Republican would be better for the country than Obama. Democrats generally think a Democrat would be better for the country than a Republican.

I was speaking to you and sooz, although the rest of the people posting on this board pretty much all have the same view of Romney as the two of you.
jim, that does go both ways. The dems will vote for anyone as long as he/she is not repub. Well, let me change that to he is not repub. I think neither side is willing to have a woman for pres yet.
I'll also add that you guys wouldn't like Romney if he only earned $10,000 per year, so you rack up as a lost cause for him and very poor judges of how the open-minded public views him.
That's probably true. The fact that his wealth and business practices have totally divorced him from any semblance of empathy or understanding of average people is only part of the problem. The other big thing, at least in my eyes, is his total lack of principles. He is almost sociopathic in his naked lust for the presidency. He will say and do anything to achieve it.

How very funny. There I was specifying you and mac as the ones I would like most to hear from because you are not dems. Of course, I appreciate everyone else's input. I just wanted to specifically see what others thought. I know what most dems think. I guess I wanted a discussion. Silly me. You blow off what I say just like many in the group blow off what you say.
I wouldn't know about Romney if he only earned $10,000 because he would not be running for pres. By only earning $10,000 he would have a clue what our poor go through. He would have a better idea how to fix it because of what he himself had to go through to survive on $10,000. He would have "earned" the money instead of investing daddy's money. There are a lot of very wealthy people for whom I have a great deal of respect. It's not the money..It's Romney's personality. I think he is ignorant and very naive. I don't hate him. I just think there is no way he could lead this country out of it's problems. I was trying to figure if repubs may have switched to Newt.
Oddly enough you did answer my question. Sorry I wasted time asking.
