Winter storm warnings were issued for most of Southwestern Quebec as a low-pressure system makes its way from Colorado.
"People should plan ahead for their morning commute," said CBC weather expert Craig Larkins. "The combination of snow, freezing rain and rain could be treacherous."
Figures show between 10 to 15 centimetres of snow falling on the Montreal region overnight. One to three centimetres more are expected to fall in the morning.
Along with snow, wind gusts of up to 50 km/h are predicted for the region.
The snow should turn to freezing rain by 6 a.m. and more rain will follow for the rest of the day.
Countdown for winter tiresThose who have not installed winter tires on their vehicles are being urged to do so quickly.
Transport Québec's Highway Safety Code kicks in on Dec. 15 and will last until March 15, 2013. People driving without winter tires could face fines between $200 and $300.
According to Transport Québec, figures from 2005 show that 38 per cent of accidents that take place during the winter months involve at least one vehicle equipped with all-season tires.
