Jonah Goldberg, prominent Conservative pundit, puts his finger on something that turns me off about today's Republican Party. I'd be happy if they were able to change it, it would make our political climate a whole lot better.

An excerpt: "My friend and colleague Ramesh Ponnuru, an Indian American and devout Catholic, says the GOP has a problem with seeming like a “club for Christians.”

That rings true to me. I’ve attended dozens of conservative events where, as the speaker, I was, in effect, the guest of honor, and yet the opening invocation made no account of the fact that the guest of honor wasn’t a Christian. I’ve never taken offense, but I can imagine how it might seem to someone who felt like he was even less a part of the club."

As it is today, this would require almost a total change of the party's identity, and alienation of the most fervent segment of their base. Or am I wrong?

No, you're not wrong. The R's are more like an exclusive xtian club, rather than a political party representing all flavors of conservative views.

You aren't wrong. I was trying to talk about this yesterday. I don't think it's incoherent in the least to say that the party serves two masters, and they are having trouble deciding which one to market. It is not a party of inclusion, but one of exclusion, They expect everyone to convert to their narrow definition of brotherhood.

The excerpt in gramps' op is missing a few key words ~ for me, adding those words [in red], so the quote reads "... a 'club for white male Christians.'" hits closer to reality ~
