These people are my heroes!
People flock to Newtown to block Westboro Baptist Church's picket of Sandy Hook funeralsWestboro Baptist Church had promised to picket the Wednesday funerals of Sandy Hook school shooting victims.
What they got was a response from people - near and far - who set out to protect the funerals from the picket. Some stood arm-in-arm and lined the streets.
Police and firefighters from as far away as New York City and Massachusetts traveled to Newtown, Connecticut, to shield the funerals from the protest, according to a number of media reports.
Members of Westboro, which has been certified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, were in town but didn't leave their hotel rooms in Hartford, Conn., according to Anonymous.
According to the Newtown Patch, Nicole Sabel of the Women's Center of Greater Danbury announced at 3:20 p.m. that Westboro Baptist Church would not protest at the wake for Dawn Hochsprung, the Sandy Hook School principal. The announcement was met with applause.
Anti-Westboro group Patriot Guard Riders organized more than 100 motorcycle riders to show their support, the Patch reported. They lined the streets arm in arm.
On the FDNY website, The Bravest, a posting asked firefighters and police officers to go to Newtown and block the protesters from the victims’ families and friends during the funeral processions.
