Seems to me this defeats the entire argument of those who favor training civilians [for lack of a better descriptor] to be ready to save others during a maniacal rampage ~ Sooz

Three New Jersey police were shot Friday morning and a gunman was killed after the suspect, who was already under arrest, somehow managed to get his hands on a gun, according to published reports.

The shootings happened inside the Gloucester Township police station early Friday morning. Police have not named the suspect, but a spokesperson said that the individual was taken in earlier on charges relating to domestic violence, according to video taken by CBS Philadelphia from a hastily organized press conference.

“The suspect in this case was shot and killed by police,” a spokesperson told reporters. “In our police department, obviously there is a very intense investigation regarding this incident in Gloucester Township headquarters.”

One of the officers involved in the incident was seriously injured, having been shot twice in the abdomen just below a bullet-proof vest, according to ABC 6 in Philadelphia.

This video is from WGN 9 News in Chicago, aired Friday, December 28, 2012. [Sooz comment: there are two video clips accessible via the end link.]

Copycat maybe?

HOOVER, Alabama - Police say a man fired shots at Hoover firefighters early today when they responded to a call for medical assistance at his Lake Cyrus home.

Firefighters were dispatched about 4:30 a.m. to the man's home in the 1600 block of Lake Cyrus Club Drive. As firefighters entered through the front door, police say Phillip Earl Jones Jr. opened fire. The firefighters retreated to a position of safety, said Hoover police Capt. Jim Coker. No one was injured by the gunfire.

Police on the scene took Jones, 45, into custody. He was taken to Shelby Baptist Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. He was then taken to the Hoover City Jail on an attempted murder charge, Coker said. He was later transferred to the Jefferson County Jail where he is being held on $30,000 bond.

Coker said authorities are still trying to determine the man's motive for shooting at firefighters.

The shooting comes just three days after two firefighters were fatally shot and two others wounded when responding to a fire in Webster, N.Y. Authorities there say an ex-con gunned down those firefighters after luring them to his neighborhood by setting a car and a house ablaze early Monday. They say he then took shots at police and committed suicide while several homes burned.
