As I See it: Looking Forward in 2012
January 1, 2012
By Hrafnkell Haraldsson

Happy New Year? We can hope so. 2011 was a rough year for America and Americans, as I noted here yesterday in our year-end edition of the Dirty Thirty. As a New York Times editorial said on the year's last day, “After they took power in January, the hard-line Republicans who dominate the House reached for a radical overhaul of American government, hoping to unravel the social safety net, cut taxes further for the wealthy and strip away regulation of business.â€

It's such a turnaround for Democrats, who were so opposed to recess appointments when a Republican was in the White House, but are screaming for them now.

The Dems use recess appointments.
The Repubs abuse the privilege.

What a disingenuous comment from you, gop! ~ the Dems would not be pushing for recess appointments now if the GOP/TP allowed qualified candidates to get an up-or-down vote instead of automatically filibustering every candidate for everything ~

I'd like to see Obama stop trying to be Mr. Nice Guy to a bunch of men who have shown him no respect since he entered office.

There, Gop...I fixed that for you.Image

I have no problem with recess appointments.  It's a legitimate option for the President.

It's many of the rest of you here who pissed and moaned when Bush used them but now are advocating their use by Obama.

Perhaps you missed my prior post, gop ~ personally, I'm not in favor of recess appointments UNLESS there is a valid reason ~ FTR, I do see virtual total obstruction "just because" as a valid reason ~

Obama has had a higher percentage of judicial appointments approved than Bush had.

If that is true, it is only very recently, gop ~ and it's certainly not by much ~ but, more importantly, there is still a "judicial crisis" because there are so many UNfilled judicial seats ~ I am strongly/deeply/forever anti "holds" by anyone on anyone for purely obstructionary reasons ~

George W. Bush made 171 recess appointments, of which 99 were to full-time positions.

As of December 8, 2011, President Barack Obama had made 28 recess appointments, all to full-time

Yep....no difference there at all.Image

gop limited his comment to "judicial appointments approved" ~ which is itself disingenuous because gop offers no, and I can't find, any comparison of how many judicial seats were open for gwb or how many remained open at this point in his presidency ~ I'm still searching for that info ~ I do know that just before leaving WDC for the holidays, the Senate approved a number of Obama's judicial candidates ~

that makes sense, given that the ones that were approved were not controversial in any way.
