I've been reading, and will post today, that the NRA is rapidly losing credibility by overplaying its hand ~ the original ideology of the NRA was laudable, but it has been perverted by the likes of LaPierre ~ and there is apparently an inter-group "positioning" war going on between the NRA and a few other, growing, more extreme [if you can believe that] groups like Gun Owners of America ~

For me personally, I see great danger in labeling people indiscriminately ~ but I also see the connection of people to organized groups ~ and then there are the exceptions, as MP explains why her hubby is a member of the NRA ~ we can never truly know what is in anyone else's heart or what might be the "final straw" that makes someone snap ~

Again for me personally, I think far too many are misreading/misinterpreting the 2d Amendment ~ but I'm a realist so I also don't see any possibility of banning or confiscating all guns ~ and that personal conflict is why I see it as imperative that the responsible gun owners work with officials to craft meaningful regulations that have a core principle of "public safety" ~ the NRA flatly refusing to consider any regulation should, in my opinion, remove them from the table ~

The NRA is too vested. They have nothing reasonable to offer. It pisses me off that they are part of the negotiation, because you already know they are going to oppose any regulation.

Say, what?

No, I don't belong to the NRA and he doesn't speak to me.
That's what I said.

You said there were 4 million members for the NRA, there are 52 million gun owners in America.

Oy, oy, oy.
Do I look as if I hold LaPierre up as some kind of "god"?
He and the NRA have become nothing but shills for the gun/armaments manufacturers.

I think it should be illegal to make someone join anything for a job, especially something that doesn't have their career/income interest at heart (like a union) or somehow enhances their knowledge for their job. Why would that be a requirement?

That being said, if all NRA members would quit, it would cripple the organization. I wonder how many people are unwilling members like mp's hubby? Interesting thought.

A lot of us are required to belong to professional organizations like the NASW (National Association of Social Workers) for our profession. Supposedly it does enhance our knowledge of the job.

If the NRA doesn't speak for you, someone should. If there are 48 million responsible gun owners out there who want reasonable protections in place, they should have a voice.

The State of Ohio only recognizes the NRA conceal carry program. To certify people in the state for their CCL, you need to be able to teach the NRA program, you can only teach the NRA program if you are a member. And the NRA conceal carry program is inadequate. My husband teaches above and beyond it, but it is the minimum requirement. People that come to us and do more than necessary to get their license are people that take it seriously and responsibly, which are the kind of people we want to work with anyway.

I strongly agree with Kathy's comment that responsible gun owners should have a voice and a seat at the table ~

So... a gun nut is killed while surrounded by guns. Doesn't that blow a hole in the argument that teachers should be armed?

I don't understand the argument that teachers should be armed. They are not going to take the first shot. They are in the defensive position. Someone will shoot them and then they have another gun. A teacher could run in from another room and kill a gunman, I guess and then maybe there would be less carnage, but isn't that what the resource officer is for.

Anyone can be surprised. A school, a mall, a movie theatre, and the list will continue to go on.

I don't even know where to start on that. I listen to all these people talk and I just want them to shut up.

They aren't motivated to shut up. They have a political and financial agenda. There has to be an alternate agenda put out there by responsible gun owners or those of us who are anti-gun will believe they speak for all of you. This does not serve either side of the issue well.

Thanks mp. I wonder if there are any other organizations that have a good conceal carry program and, if so, why the NRA is the only one allowed by the state? Who trains cops (local and state)? Does the FBI or Homeland security have a program?

kathy, that's why I asked mp. To me the NRA is about as far from a "professional association" as it can get. There is no degree required to own a gun or be a member. There is nothing professional about gun ownership. Anyone can own one.

My husband trains some police. SWAT and 2 of the suburbs here. Now that he works for the City of Columbus Fire, I am sure he will get some ins into their police department too.
