:lol I hope they understand: Their borders will need to be regulated with designated crossings and they will need to have their own passports. Even with passports, their travel may be restricted. They will need to have their own currency and negotiate trade with the USA. They will not receive any funds from the government of the USA for infrastructure, education et al.

Then their citizens will need to understand: They will have to pay much higher taxes to offset the loss of Fed. funds. Their currency may not be equal to the US$ for the exchange rate should they shop outside their new country's borders. Any of the items they need that must travel though the US will be subject to additional tariffs and taxes. That seceding from a country involves a lot more than just getting a few signatures.

Anarchy in the USA? Folks in 15 states file petitions to secede

It’s either the political theater equivalent of a hissy fit or the start of more than a dozen new countries: Citizens in 15 states have filed petitions to secede from the United States after Tuesday’s election. These include Louisiana (which led the charge), the Republic of Texas, Kentucky, Colorado, New Jersey, Montana, North Dakota, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Oregon. And somewhat hilariously, someone in North Dakota filed a petition requesting New York secede, which seems pretty rude, given they are sort of handling a major natural disaster right now. Although this is largely seen as symbolic, the filers in each state still have a month to gather 25,000 signatures to have their peaceful withdrawal from the U.S.A. considered by the president. Good luck with that.

I followed the trail to the NJ petition. Less than 3,000 signatures so far, and not many of them from NJ residents. :ey

I'm going with "hissy fit" on this topic.

I'm with Chaos on "hissy fit" ~ I'm willing to bet that none of the "brains" promoting secession gave a single thought to any of the real consequences that roseanne lists in the op ~ and many of the 15 states that filed paperwork are among the biggest recipients of federal $$$ ~ the mindset is very reminiscent of bratty children who, if they don't get their own way or can't win, take their toys and go home ~

I don't think any of them truly wish to secede. I think they're just trying to express their displeasure and to make a political point.

But if all it takes is gathering the required number of signatures, you have to wonder why there was such a bloody civil war?!

It's now up to 20 states, lol.

How unpatriotic and unAmerican of these people! :angry

I saw a documentary a couple of years ago about a militia in Alabama. They were planning on making a new "white country" formed with other states that might secede, with Alabama being the capital.

There may yet be another civil war. People are crazy! The government has to approve the secession from what I understand. Should they get the required 25,000 siggys and the government not approve.....................

I can understand and respect informed disagreement ~ but I've had my limit of the GOP/TP "true believers" ~ who, IMO, are nothing more than bratty children ~ reality, the Constitution, and simple decency be damned ~ they want what they want when they want it ... or else ~ not only are they losers, they are BAD LOSERS ~ :angry

Agreed. However, I think we should just let one state secede - Texas. Give those in the other states clamoring for secession a chance to move freely to Texas before we close the state's borders off (and of course, let all the rational Texans vacate the state if they so desire).

This is really funny. Let them all secede.

Seems to be the "Texas" solution that is popular across the internet. LOL! Good luck with them bartering trade with all the nations for the oil they refine, including Canada. That could be one expensive, sticky wicket.

Another thing hubby mentioned. They would/should lose their US citizenship right away. Become a citizen of the country of Texaskistan. :b

It really is, oskar ~ especially because I don't think there is any way for any state to secede ~ but it sure does "out" the mindset ~

Let's keep Texas but give them Oklahoma or Kentucky.
It would be easier to build Interstates around them.
And visa requirements are a must.

4 Reasons Why Secession Talk is Nonsense
by Scott Manning on November 13, 2012

My Facebook feed and Inbox have become inundated with the news that there are online petitions for at least 30 states to secede from the Union. Here is why the entire hubbub is nonsense.

First, most of these petitioners do not appreciate what it would mean to secede. Several of the petitions state they want their state to leave the Union “peacefully.” There is no peaceful secession. People like Texas Governor Sam Houston understood this in 1861 and we should understand it now. If a state genuinely tries to secede, the state will be in rebellion. It will result in war.

Second, we already settled the issue of secession 147 years ago and the secessionists lost. People like to say, “Elections have consequences.” Well, wars have consequences too. It does not matter why they seceded back in 1860-61; what matters is they lost their bid for secession on the battlefield.

Third, these petitioners are in the minority and they are only gaining attention due to the extremity of their request. The media rarely covers moderates and their sensible opinions. Some of us voted for Romney because we thought he was more qualified to handle the economy, but the last thing we would want is secession over his loss. That sort of talk does not make a good headline though.

Fourth, and most importantly, every modern state lacks the political complexion to support secession. In 1860, Lincoln received ZERO votes in North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, all of which seceded. Lincoln was not even on their ballots. So when Lincoln won the election, folks in these states struggled with the fact that no one they knew actually voted for the president-elect. Even then, the people of these states did not unanimously support secession. We do not have the same situation in America today. President Obama won at least one district in every state except Oklahoma and even there, he still won 33% of the popular vote. Anyone in any state can find someone who voted for the president in his or her state.

Secession is not happening. Those that support it do not appreciate or understand the full implications of it. They are in the minority.

Stop it.

And stop giving it attention. :tup

We should let them go, and take in Puerto Rico and Guam as states instead.

Did the people of Guam vote to do so?

Not yet, as far as I know. But we can ask them to.

Did the people in the states where the petitions are being signed vote to secede?

So you'd better ask them before assuming they'd agree to statehood.
Puerto Rico voted in favour this time but you'd better make certain since they have voted against on 3 (I think) previous occasions.

They would lose their U.S. citizenship but likely become immediate citizens of Mexico. If my memory is correct, Mexico has never ceded jurisdiction over Texas.

I doubt Mexico would want to claim them.

Did the citizens of the current states vote to become states? What about the Confederate states?

Now there's a counter petition:

Deport Everyone That Signed A Petition To Withdraw Their State From The United States Of America

I signed it!

Your claim to being "the greatest democracy in the history of the world" is getting shaky.
