A new report issued by Montreal police states authorities have solved only two of the 18 homicides directly related to organized crime last year.
Police are reporting a total of 35 homicides in 2012. They say members of the traditional Italian mafia, biker gangs and street gangs carried out 18 of those killings.
A report on last year's homicides shows Mafia-related killings were more common than in 2011.
Police spokesman Cmdr. Ian Lafrenière said Vito Rizzuto's return to Montreal could have been a factor in the increased number.
"I'd be lying [if I told] you that we have no reasons to believe it is [related to Rizzuto's return], but we got no indication to confirm this," said Lafrenière.
Police reported two homicides directly related to the Mafia in 2011 compared with five in 2012.
Lafrenière said groups from different crime organizations often work together for financial gain, and that is why finding culprits can sometimes be difficult.
"We're still putting in a lot of effort. This is not over for us. It's going to take months or years to find suspects," said Lafrenière.
He said it takes a lot more resources and partnerships with the provincial police and the RCMP to solve this type of crime.
All domestic violence cases solved
Police said all 10 deaths related to domestic violence were solved last year.
Lafrenière said authorities often immediately know who the suspects are and can take action quickly.
Seven other homicides not related to domestic violence or organized crime were also recorded in 2012.
Of last year's 35 homicides, 17 were solved and 18 are still under investigation.
