Yeah but all the legislation passed by the Harpercrites is so full of holes that it's unworkable. The latest example: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-c ... amils.html

The mere fact that they would pass this kind of legislation and think they can sneak it past the people tells me there is a sickness of hatred that runs through the Harper CONservative government and it results in laws like Bill C-304.

Not everybody is "sick" like the Harpercrites.
So far, pretty much all the legal challenges to the Harpercrites have been successful... even in the CONservative packed Supreme Court.

I'm no fan of either Harper or hate crime laws. It's difficult to determine exactly what the changes to the Human Rights Act were - and I wouldn't trust a publication called The Progressive to give me the truth - but I do agree there should have been far more public debate before it happened. What is interesting is that it was a private members bill. They generally start off being hopeless and go downhill from there. This one made it through thanks to the Conservatives.

As for Jason Kenney, he should just strap on his swastika and be done with it. The funny thing is, it's going to bite him on the ass. His amendments on immigration last fall were aimed directly at blocking non-white immigration and increasing good old white immigration from Europe. What he doesn't understand is that the Europeans don't want to emigrate to either Canada or the U.S. anymore. It wasn't some great epiphany that jacked up non-white immigration. It was the fact that white Europeans no longer wanted to come here in sufficient numbers.

I accept Ford's explanation of the picture. The New Year's Levees are meet and greets open to the public. Anybody who shows up gets a picture with the Mayor. He probably wouldn't know 95% of them and there would certainly be no time to do a background check. Hazel over in Misissauga does the same thing and could probably get caught just as easily.

Private members bills are the way the CONservatives skirt non-confidence. This bill wasn't the first and won't be the last. The first one was the bill to end the long gun registry. There's another on the way to change how "life" is defined in the criminal code. It comes up for what passes as "debate" in parliament in March.

Rob Ford needs to be careful who he gets a picture taken with. If I were in his shoes and someone dressed like that wanted a photo taken with me, I'd be refusing - vehemently - period.

Quote:
I have used the terms "violence" and "cruel" deliberately. The linguistic style of the Harper government is visible representation of an unbroken pattern of fixed and unbending political goals, no matter what the human or environmental cost – goals that are rooted in his pronouncements while head of the National Citizens Coalition. In this worldview, there is no room for forgiveness, compassion or simple human generosity. There is no room for acknowledging the reality of other people's points of view. There is only a relentless process of denigration, marginalization and disrespect.
