Candy Crowley has enjoyed a strong reputation for journalistic integrity for years so I am really shocked at her glaring omission [which I'm sure is covered in Journalism 101] with Elaine Chao ~ don't forget that Candy is the one who fact-checked Romney in real-time during one of the debates ~ Sooz

What’s up with CNN lately? They can’t seem to figure out where they fit in the spectrum of the news (because impartiality is apparently out of the question). So maybe they are just playing both sides against the middle? Or maybe they are just lost. On Sunday, they managed to piss off both the right and the left within hours.
On State Of The Union, host Candy Crowley let former Bush Labor Secretary Elaine Chao prattle on about how horrible President Obama is and how much his “far left agenda” is ruining the country. You know, same old crap. Including the lie that the President had a Democratic majority in Congress for a year:

“I don’t know how he can say that when he had control of both the houses in the legislative branch, he had control of the White House from 2009 to 2010. He was able to get sweeping changes through to our economy, which actually, including for example, Obamacare and also Dodd-Frank [financial reform], which are actually having a hampering effect — they’re having a dampening effect on job creation.”
Then she whined:

“I’m actually rather surprised that in his inaugural address that there was not a more magnanimous spirit shown, that there was not more of a graciousness to focus on reaching out to the other side to work together. He uses the words, but if you look at the agenda, it’s very much a far left-agenda item… So, I think the president has to focus on job creation. He cannot do everything at one time.” (source)

[Sooz comment: video accessible via the end link] While former Obama adviser Melody Barnes tried to address these lies, Candy sat by smiling woodenly. She even allowed Chao to interrupt Barnes with yet another lie, that the Republicans in Congress are the ones who asked for VP Joseph Biden to get involved in the fiscal cliff “crisis.” Suuuuuure they did.
All through this segment, Candy never once pointed out a very pertinent fact about Ms. Chao – that she is married to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Yes, that’s right. A so-called journalist allows a woman who is intimately involved (hang on, I just threw up a little in my mouth) with the man who has admitted to wanting to stymie the President’s every move. Because Chao isn’t biased – oh, no!
But CNN wasn’t done yet. Fareed Zakaria had Al Gore as his guest on his GPS show. During the interview, Zakaria touched on the sale of Current TV to Al-Jazeera. He and the former VP spoke briefly about the Arab news organization, Gore praising it as “highly respected” and “award-winning.” Which is true. The two spent about a minute-and-a-half on the subject.
But this didn’t sit well with the folks over at Newsbusters. Why? Well, dagnabbit, Zakaria didn’t ask about Al-Jazeera’s ” connection to oil.”

“And that was it. Not one question about selling his television network to an organization sponsored by an oil nation…. So in a thirteen minute interview, Zakaria spent roughly one minute on al Jazeera buying Current, and totally ignored the astonishingly hypocritical elephant in the room.” (source)

[Sooz comment: video accessible via the end link] So let me get this straight – a group of self-styled media watchdogs are pitching a bitch about tiny Current being sold to a company that is owned by an oil-rich nation all the while ignoring the other elephant in the room. Where is the outrage about Fox News and their Saudi Prince? That’s right, Al-Waleed bin Talal, a Saudi prince and investment tycoon, holds a stake in News Corp, Fox News’ parent company. His Kingdom Foundation is News Corps’ second largest stock holder. But Fox and their supporters don’t want you to know that. So keep it under your hat.
Honestly, Newsbusters, if you are all freaked out about oil rich countries having some kind of undue influence on American media, you better cast your net a little wider. Otherwise everyone will just think you are a bunch of hacks. Oh, wait…
So, hey CNN – maybe you’d better make more of an effort to be informed about your guests. About their issues, their biases, their backers. And perhaps you should hold your news people to the high standard that used to be associated with CNN. Back when James Earl Jones could intone “This is CNN” without irony.
