Rick Santorum’s plan to revitalize the GOP: Defund Planned Parenthood

In a fundraising email sent Sunday, former Pennsylvanian Sen. Rick Santorum warned that social conservatives were being pushed out of the Republican Party.

The former GOP presidential candidate said he had a three point plan to prevent the Republican Party from abandoning social conservatives and destroying itself. His plan consisted of mobilizing “pro-family conservatives,” defunding Planned Parenthood, and launching a media blitz to “refut[e] the lies and half-truths that our detractors in the GOP are spreading about us.”

“[W]e are going to push Republican congressional leaders to defund the monstrosity that is Planned Parenthood,” Santorum explained. “Too many in the GOP want to ignore the millions of innocent lives that have been extinguished by this vile organization. Defunding Planned Parenthood is a winning issue. The polls prove it.”

Republicans in Congress have repeatedly failed to pass legislation that would prohibit Planned Parenthood or any other abortion provider from receiving federal funding through Title X of the Public Health Service Act. Title X funds already cannot be used for abortion services, but pro-life Republicans have argued that funding to Planned Parenthood was “fungible” because it could be used to pay for expenses like overhead operational costs.

“The people we are fighting are backed by the very wealthiest donors in the country,” Santorum added. “They don’t understand or care about the values of heartland Americans. Their values aren’t ours. And they want to ‘modernize’ the GOP and push us out of the Republican Party.”

Santorum founded the group Patriot Voices after his failed presidential bid in 2012.

Hmmmm. Friday evening I got a survey call asking my opinions on Planned Parenthood. The call went on and I and I told the pollster it was a good thing he reached me instead of Hubby because he'd have hung up long ago.

I don't think Santorum is telling the truth on the “Too many in the GOP want to ignore the millions of innocent lives that have been extinguished by this vile organization. Defunding Planned Parenthood is a winning issue. The polls prove it.”

I don't see much recent polling, but in 2011 this was a false statement.

People are generally surrounded by like-minded people. Santorum's bubble of ultra-conservatism obscures his vision to anything beyond his immediate circle. I also think ultra-conservatives think in terms like good and evil which usually causes me to stop reading. Anything not with them is evil instead of different. Most of us with a value set he considers evil are pro-family, too. He just doesn't get that not all families are like his. I don't think they WANT to get us; they want us to model them.
