Tornado emergency issued for Oklahoma City area

By Sean Morris and Chelsea J. Carter, CNN

updated 7:40 PM EDT, Fri May 31, 2013

The National Weather Service declared a tornado emergency for the western portion of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area on Friday.

The declaration means a large, destructive tornado is moving into a densely populated area where widespread damage and fatalities could occur.

The tornado emergency includes the suburbs of Yukon and Bethany.

Authorities are evacuating Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport due to the threat from an approaching tornado, which the National Weather Service says is moving at 40 mph.

Forecasters: 'Particularly dangerous situation' developing over Oklahoma

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch Friday for a large swath of Oklahoma that included the twister-ravaged community of Moore, describing it as "a particularly dangerous situation."

The storm is likely to generate several intense tornadoes, according to the agency's Storm Prediction Center.

Forecasters warned large hail and damaging winds with gusts of 80 mph were possible.

"An extremely unstable air mass has developed" across much of central and eastern Oklahoma, the storm center said in an advisory. "...This is a particularly dangerous situation."

The tornado watch was in effect until midnight in Oklahoma, forecasters said.

Maybe one of them gods was looking out for the Canadian tractor trailer driver heading to Moore and that's why the the truck is being held up at the border?

Wow, this is bad. I feel so sorry for those people. :\'(

An interesting statistic I read in an article about this:

Most tornadoes in the United States are relatively small. Of the 60 EF5 tornadoes to hit since 1950, Oklahoma and Alabama have been hit the most — seven times each.
