One of my friends raised three boys without "mom". I've raised mine since he was four. There are quite a few single dads in my area raising their kids without moms, and we all don't get mothers day cards.

But Jab, don't you think you should get limp toast in bed and limp dandelion bouquets on mother's day, like the rest of us mothers, to respect the double duty you do?

A small recognition in society that it is by far not only mothers who do double duty would suffice. There are more of us than people think.

Maybe it's time to consolidate and celebrate "Parents Day". There is also a boatload of Grandparent(s) who are raising their grands, Aunts and/or Uncles too.

There's a Grandparent's Day. It's the first Sunday after Labor Day. It's been celebrated since 1978.

Yes, I know SciFi.....I'm one of those! :b

That doesn't really acknowledge the ones who are parenting. A combined day of celebration for all who parent. Mom and Dad, two moms, two dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles or fosters would be nice. :D

I agree with that! Let's start a movement! What date shall we pick?

* Currently Mother's Day is the second Sunday in May.
* Father's Day is the second Sunday in June.
* Grandparent's Day is the first Sunday following Labor Day in September.

August is a month that's rather devoid of holidays. I nominate Parents Day to be the second Sunday in August!

Actually, I was talking about replacing those days with the one "Parent's Day", so it could be any time. :) I'm sure the greeting card industry would love to keep the three, with the additional day, but TFB!

Well, our Parents Day proposal has nothing to do with the greeting card business. The greeting card business never even crossed my mind. I am in favor of the idea philosophically and because I think it's a great idea -- and not because I care whether the greet card industry sells more cards or not! Whether they do or don't sell more cards has no bearing on my thinking that it's a good idea to have such a day. Just as I like Christmastime and couldn't care less whether the greeting card industry sells cards or not.

I see Parent's Day as akin to other gender-neutral things whose time has come -- such as now saying "postal worker" instead of "mailman" and "flight attendant" instead of "stewardess". Similarly, I think we should have a gender-neutral Parent's Day, rather than a Mother's Day and a Father's Day.

I don't care about the greeting card industry either and I understood you from the get-go. That was my warped sarcastic, jaded side coming out. ;)

A gender neutral holiday would send the conservatives around the bend. We'd be accused of wanting to make gender neutral "normal" and trying to force a "neutral lifestyle" onto society. They would accuse us of wanting to destroy "traditional families". We would have to organize a "Gender Neutral Pride Parade" just to watch/listen to the nutters get worked up into a fit of apoplexy. We'd need a symbol....maybe a T-Rex? :rollin
