I don't expect Sandusky to win the appeal [too much evidence, too many other confessions], but I'm curious what would happen to these settlements if, by the longest of odds, he DID win the appeal ~ ~ while $$$ won't/can't wipe out the memories, I hope this young man [and the others who settle] at least have a sense of justice being served ~ Sooz

Penn State makes first settlement with Jerry Sandusky victim

The first civil claim brought by a victim against Penn State University over child sexual abuse by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky has been settled, an attorney for the young man told NBC News Saturday.

Philadelphia-based attorney Tom Kline said his client, known as Victim 5, and representatives of Penn State had signed the settlement Friday.

Sandusky, 69, was convicted in 2012 of 45 counts of child sex abuse, which he committed during and after he was a defensive coach at the university. He is serving a sentence of 30 to 60 years but is appealing the conviction.

Kline said he believes that settlements will be finalized in 25 other of the 31 civil cases against the school "in the next two to three weeks." Kline said that his client is "relieved" at the settlement and noted that the man “provided key testimony” against Sandusky.

Kline did not release the terms of the settlement, and he said his client would not make a public statement. The university declined comment to NBC News on Friday of any pending or finalized suits.

The Philadelphia Inquirer, which first reported on the settlement, said that Victim 5 settled for several million dollars.

Kline said he and his client "believe Penn State has earned the right to move forward as a great university." Kline also said the path was open for Penn State to recover money from insurers and from The Second Mile, the charity for at-risk youth that Sandusky founded.

Victim 5’s testimony was key because the abuse he suffered occurred months after a former football team assistant told top school officials that he had seen Sandusky engaged in a sex act with a boy in a shower at the university in 2001.

The assistant, Mike McQueary, testified that he reported the incident to Coach Joe Paterno, former university vice president Gary Schultz and ex-athletic director Tim Curley.

Paterno was fired and died in January 2012.

Curley, Schultz and former President Graham Spanier were ordered last month to stand trial on charges they covered up the Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal. All three denied the allegations.

Penn State's trustees authorized some $60 million in settlements last month, The Associated Press reported.

Victim 5, who is 25 years old now, was among eight young men who testified at Sandusky's trial last year about abuse.
