Police say man caught downloading child porn on his phone while being interviewed by police

Perhaps, when one is being interviewed by police about the thousands of child pornography images police appear to have discovered on one’s computer, it is advisable to turn off your phone.

A public defender entered Walter Louis Gafvert III’s not guilty plea to the felony count of possessing child pornography as Gafvert “fidgeted in his seat and wept briefly,” the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported Friday. Gafvert, a 48-year-old resident of Boulder Creek, Calif., was arrested after Santa Cruz police served a search warrant at his home which yielded thousands of child porn images on a computer and cellphones, authorities said.

Police arrested Gafvert Wednesday, and while searching a cellphone Gafvert had on him during a police interview, officers discovered an active download of child porn, Santa Cruz Deputy Chief of Police Steve Clark said. Gafvert told police he had an addiction to child pornography as well as the drug methamphetamine, according to KTVU.

Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge Timothy Volkmann raised the bail amount from $5,000 to $25,000. Gafvert, who faces up to three years in prison if convicted, remained in custody late Friday, according to KSBW.
