The wife of the Florida neighbourhood watchman who was acquitted of killing an unarmed black teenager is divorcing him, her lawyer has said.

The filing by Shellie Zimmerman, 26, comes a week after she admitted lying for her husband in a bail hearing.

George Zimmerman, 29, was not in court as she was sentenced to a year's probation and 100 hours of community service for perjury.

Her husband shot dead 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February 2012.

He claimed self-defence and was acquitted in July of second-degree murder in the Orlando suburb of Sanford.

Mrs Zimmerman's lawyer, Kelly Sims, confirmed her client had submitted a petition for divorce on Thursday in Seminole County, central Florida.

She said last week in an interview with ABC News that she was not sure if she wanted to stay married to her husband.

At a June 2012 hearing for him, Mrs Zimmerman lied about the assets they had while a judge was determining a bail amount.

I truly hope these two people self destruct so the news media will no longer be able to report about them. She's as evil as he is, IMO.

I would have thought the best advice she could have given her client was to make the application in California or from the backwoods of Idaho. You never know when George is going to decide he's being attacked again.

I think it likely he asked her to lie about their assets....which shows how lightly he regards perjury if he indeed did ask this of her: if he would ask his wife to perjure herself just so they could get a lighter bail, would he hesitate to commit perjury if his life was on trial???

She's divorcing him to protect assets from court costs. With or without his consent. That's the way people like this think.
