British team is developing a car that it hopes will be capable of reaching 1,000mph (1,610km/h).
Powered by a rocket bolted to a jet engine, the Bloodhound Supersonic Car will try to break the land speed record in South Africa in 2014.
The car's driver, RAF fighter pilot Andy Green, told Newsbeat about the project and the hope that the mission will inspire a new generation's interest in science.
