My brother's friend who lives in San Diego County has an all-electric car. He says he has no trouble nor concerns about finding charging stations. He charges it at home, his work has a charging station, and he says there are enough charging stations around the county that he is not concerned.

But other counties might not be so well equipped yet.

I suspect most people who are in the market today to buy an electric car would probably buy a hybrid (runs on gasoline or battery) -- just to feel "safe" [that is, if they couldn't find a charging station, they could always drive the car on gasoline].

And yet, a lot of people are buying all-electric cars. Would you?

Brilliant non-descriptive answer.

Accurate answer, given the restricted choices.

Nope, an inaccurate answer. You're just trying to be a smart ass, as usual.

I asked you to elaborate -- but you can't. Because you don't have an answer. You were just trying to post a smart ass response.

The question posed was: "If you were in the market today to buy a new car, would you buy an all-electric car?" If you were in the market to buy a new car, but didn't want an electric car, then you would select: "I would not buy an electric car, either hybrid or all-electric."

I'm not in the market to buy a new car, but if I were, I would give consideration to buying a hybrid.

I park in a garage in my condo complex, and the electricity in the garages is paid for by the Homeowners Association. I'm not sure if they would allow chargers in garages since the garages are not individually metered.

Sooner or later homeowners are going to approach the Association about this matter. Perhaps the Association could charge such homeowners who have a flat fee (say, $50 or $100/month) to offset the cost of running the charger in their garage.

SciFi, I answered "I would buy an all-electric car."

Of course that would depend on what information I find after doing some research. It's possible I may feel a need to change to a hybrid instead, but from what I know now I could see going all-electric.

I would buy a clean diesel. Yes, they exist. They currently out perform hybrids, and the new diesels coming out from VW, Toyota, et al will be even better.

But if I were to buy a hybrid, I'd probably buy a Chevy Volt. Electricity powers it, and it makes its own electricity as well as taking a charge from the household 110v or 220v AC, so its range is unlimited.

IN this part of the country, you put on a lot of miles. And, aside from the Tesla (not available here), no all-electric I know of would guarantee me I'd make it back home in time for supper. Or even breakfast.

I see electric cars as a BIG safety issue because they are virtually SILENT ~

That's true. I think some have added a sound so pedestrians can hear them.

I would consider an all electric car when there are sufficient charging stations throughout the country so I don't have to fear being stuck somewhere without means to recharge. Until then, hybrid it is.

The propulsion systems are virtually silent, but then so are modern internal combustion engines at very low speeds, unless the air conditioning is operating. At street speeds, the loudest sound is the tires on the pavement, and the movement of air over the surface of the vehicle, regardless of propulsion system. It seems like the greatest danger to pedestrians from silent cars is in parking lots

There are "noise kits" available for that problem. You can make your little electric puddle jumper sound like a semi truck. :)

Like Oskar I NEVER buy new cars, but if I did I'd probably go for a hybrid, on both environmental and practical grounds.
