Yaaaayyyyy!!!!!
Of course, I would have been happy no matter who took the top prize. I knew that Elle had a huge amount of support, but I also had doubts that a "vicious" breed would win. I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Bully for her! Elle the pit bull is 2013 American Hero Dog

Yea, Elle!!!!

Jason's roommate's dog Buddy is a pitbull and we love him. He was afraid of Buffy, our cat who passed away, and I used to have to escort Buddy when passing Buffy.

Individually, a pit bull might be nice and docile. But as a whole, the breed is aggressive. With all the breeds to choose from, I think anyone who has a pit bull for their pet is just plain foolish. I would not have a pit bull for my pet.

Aren't a lot of breeds aggressive? I was scared to death of a neighbor's German Shepherd. Every time I passed him he barked and bared his teeth at me.

My niece Tracy was bitten by a friend's boxer and my mom was nipped by my neighbor's Jack Russell terrier (who bit everyone).

Chewy, my yellow lab, was the nicest kindest most wonderful dog in the world. One day mother was sitting in the backyard and our neighbor Tony was cutting our grass. Tony saw a bee on my mother's back and he went to swat if off. Chewy rushed him with teeth exposed. Mother calmed her. I think Chewy would have hurt Tony in protection of my mother.

All animals have the potential for aggression. I have met aggressive golden retrievers and I live with a puggle who constantly tries to pick fights with his (130 lb) pitbull brother. The big guy could bite him in two but he doesn't. Training, socialization and loving supervision are key.

Fact is, the Police K-9 was the one dog out of all of them who had to wear a muzzle during some of the Hero Dog events.

Elle was just fine.
