No! It was the flag of traitors. And it was also the flag of racism, bigotry, discrimination, and slavery. The only place the place the Confederate flag belongs is in a burning fireplace.

If that's the case the US flag is the same given the slavery, genocide, rebellion/treason, etc.

CNN) -- You can debate whether the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism. But the one thing you can't dispute: The Confederate flag was flown by traitors to the United States of America who slaughtered more than 110,000 U.S. soldiers.

I think he has that reversed.

He states that the Confederates were traitors because they "broke from the United States and created their own nation". The Founding Fathers did the same when they declared independence from the British. Anyone that opposed the existing government of their country can be labeled a traitor, even those that opposed Hitler.

What is not debatable is that Confederates did this to continue and to expand slavery. And slavery - when based entirely on race - is definitely racism. So the Confederate flag, like it or not, is without a doubt a symbol of racism.

ditto for Canada, of course. and half of the other nations on Earth. so much flag burning, that one might have to address the environmental impact.

No, because the United States realized it was doing wrong, changed its laws to undo the wrong, and issued official apologies for its wrongful behavior.

The Confederate states have never apologized.

So we gave the land we took by force back to the native Americans?

We broke from the British govt because we didn't like their laws and fought them and declared our own country. The blacks iin South Africa fought their govt against aparthied. People all over the world are fighting their corrupt govts. Didn't you say we should help the Syrian people? They are fighting their govt so they are traitors aren't they?

But torture, rendition, political murders, unprovoked wars, use of WMDs, assassinations, overthrow of foreign governments, massacre of foreign civilians, etc., etc., etc. are all A-OK as long as you apologize every time even though it's repeated every few years.

But, oskar, we are good and the rest of you are evil. Our "oops" means something.

For what they stood for, the Confederate Flag is no better than the Nazi flag. They both belong in a burning fireplace.

Is it your contention, Oskar, that the United States is no better than Nazi Germany?

SciFi sometimes I think you have to be kidding with some of this shit.

The South fought for the right to own slaves, you know, like many of our founding fathers owned slaves. It was wrong. No question about it. The Nazis tried to get rid of all the Jews. The comparison would not be with southerners owning slaves. If there is a legitimate comparison it would be with the US declaring Maniifest Destiny and stealing the land while trying to get rid of the Native Americans.

I've always found that trying to compare horse puckey to Chateaubriand didn't work worth a damn.
