Conservatives rip ‘Guns & Ammo’ magazine for editorial supporting safety laws

681 Print Friendly and PDFEmail this page 681Conservative media and readers are criticizing Guns & Ammo magazine for an upcoming editorial supporting firearm safety regulation, Ad Age reported on Wednesday.

“Way too many gun owners still seem to believe that any regulation of the right to keep and bear arms is an infringement,” technical editor Dick Metcalf wrote in the magazine’s December issue. (PDF) “The fact is, all constitutional rights are regulated, always have been, and need to be.”

While he supported the right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment, Metcalf wrote, he also supported the right for “adequate training” to be required for someone to do so.

“I’ve seen too many examples of unsafe behavior on too many shooting ranges to believe otherwise,” Metcalf wrote. “And we’ve all read too many accounts of legally armed individuals dealing with the consequences of not being properly trained or prepared when confronted with a bad situation.”

Metcalf’s take was quickly ripped on the magazine’s Facebook page; with several readers saying on Wednesday they would abandon Guns & Ammo.

“Off the topic but just want to know why your editor would support gun control?” one commenter wrote. “This is a gun magazine correct? I don’t think we will be reading your magazine anymore.”

Both AdAge and theNew York Times reported that criticism was also pouring in from conservatives online, with The Truth About Guns posting on Wednesday that “Metcalf’s bone-headed, uninformed, patently obvious misinterpretation of the Second Amendment’s introductory clause isn’t as bad as the antis’ assertion that the 2A only applies to Americans in a militia, but it’s the next worst thing.”

First pre-requisite to owning a gun is an IQ greater than my hat size.
That should take care of at least 50% of the "nuts".

Whereas the first criteria for those that own a gun under the current system is an IQ smaller than your hat size.

At least this puts to bed all those tiresome false arguments about how modern day gun owners are so well trained and responsible.

My problem isn't IQ. It's hotheadedness. The guys arguing over the parking spot in HD may have been very intelligent, but hotheaded.

Quick to anger and pull out a gun. No one should pull out a gun over road rage or a parking slot, but it's common place to read about it.

Anger management training is gun training?!?

‘Guns and Ammo’ bows to conservative backlash and fires editor who penned pro-regulation column
By Travis Gettys
Thursday, November 7, 2013 10:54 EST

Guns and Ammo magazine has fired a contributing editor who published a column promoting firearm safety regulation after conservatives complained.

“Way too many gun owners still seem to believe that any regulation of the right to keep and bear arms is an infringement,” technical editor Dick Metcalf wrote in the magazine’s December issue. (PDF) “The fact is, all constitutional rights are regulated, always have been, and need to be.”

Metcalf said he supported the right to keep and bear arms, but he also advocated better training to prevent the “many examples” of accidental shootings by legally armed Americans.

The editorial will run in the magazine’s December issue, but the backlash commenced as soon as the column’s contents became public.

Readers blasted the magazine on its Facebook page and threatened to cancel their subscriptions.

Guns and Ammo editor Jim Bequette apologized to readers online, saying the magazine’s “commitment to the Second Amendment is unwavering,” and announced that Metcalf had been fired.

“Dick Metcalf has had a long and distinguished career as a gunwriter, but his association with Guns & Ammo has officially ended,” Bequette said.

The editor blamed himself for publishing the column, saying he’d hoped it would generate a “healthy exchange of ideas on gun rights,” but admitted that he’s plainly miscalculated by publishing a column that was “untrue” to the magazine’s tradition.

“His views do not represent mine — nor, most important, Guns & Ammo’s,” Bequette said. “It is very clear to me that they don’t reflect the views of our readership either.”

That's what happens when you piss off a bunch of gun nuts. They make threats, and since they're armed AND DANGEROUS, they must be placated!
