I've been thinking about an item in today's entry in our This Week in God thread, which says:

* Another Catholic diocese is seeking Chapter 11 protection, this time in Montana: “The Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena, Mont., filed for bankruptcy protection on Friday to pave the way for a $15 million settlement of lawsuits alleging clergy members sexually abused 362 children over five decades, according to a diocese spokesman.”

Doing the math, that's UNDER $41,500 per child for 50 years of causing children to live in misery and fear, and oftentimes ruining the children's lives ~ is that fair?

There's nothing fair about any of that. "Sorry we molested you, here's $15K?"

On the other hand, plenty of other victims of abuse never see a dime if they weren't "lucky" enough to have been molested by members of a giant entity with a lot of cash.

And why are churches even able to file for bankruptcy? For a group that loves to shout about how "above the laws of man" they are when it comes to bigotry and discrimination..... :hmm

No amount of money can make up for what they did to the kids.

The Catholic church has plenty of money and plenty of rich followers, let them help this diocese. If the govt can give them bankruptcy protections then the govt should also be able to go in and arrest all the people involved in the crimes, coverup etc and throw them in prison for the rest of their lives. The priority should be protecting the kids, not protecting the church's assets.
