Portland Robbery Suspect Accidentally Shoots Himself In The… What?Author: Deborah Montesano January 31, 2014 3:32 pm
Portland, Ore. is known as a city where quirky things happen. That truism apparently applies to its criminals as well. Local news tried to describe Tuesday’s incident politely, using terms like ‘groin’, ‘leg’, and ‘testicles’ but, to put it bluntly, a robbery suspect accidentally shot himself in the nuts.
The suspect’s problems began with tucking his handgun into his pants.A man, later identified as Joseph Johnson [editor's note -- "Johnson" is the perfect name for this guy], confronted a neighbor he knew in the parking lot of their apartment house and demanded some property from him. He then allegedly shot the neighbor, Joseph Merrell, in the leg. As Johnson ran away, he shoved his gun into the waistband of his pants and accidentally fired it, shooting himself in the, well, okay, the testicles.
Another resident of the building, Josh Howell, heard the commotion and went outside to investigate. According to him, Johnson asked him to call an ambulance because he was wounded. Howell also saw Merrell on the ground in the parking lot. The victim picked himself up and went to a nearby Safeway for help. The suspect ran inside the apartment building, which the police soon surrounded.
As officers canvassed the area, a Transit policeman spotted Johnson on a nearby street, talking to a woman who was getting into her car. The woman did not know Johnson, who tried to run. However, he fell to the ground — presumably in great pain. After all, he just shot himself in the nuts. He was still carrying the handgun involved in the shooting — or more precisely, in both shootings.
Victim and suspect were both treated. The victim, Merrell, was taken to the hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. The suspect, Johnson, was treated and booked into Multnomah County jail on Wednesday. He was charged with Robbery in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Police later discovered that the handgun was stolen during a car break-in last November.
Obviously, according to the charges, Johnson is a known felon. There is not only some satisfaction in the fact that he self-administered a bit of justice, but also that he may have impaired his ability to reproduce. After all, the man shot himself in the nuts.
