Republican Defects To Democratic Party, Citing Pressure To Turn Against Hispanics
By Esther Yu-Hsi Lee on February 11, 2014 at 1:27 pm

Nearly nine months after the Florida Republican National Committee Director of Hispanic Outreach quit the Republican Party over a “culture of intolerance,” another official from the state has defected to the Democratic Party. On Monday afternoon, Ana Rivas Logan, a former state representative, showed up at the Miami-Dade Elections Department to file as a Democrat.

Rivas Logan said, “The GOP of today is not the party I joined. It’s not the party of my parents. It’s a party that has been radicalized and held hostage by a group of extremists.”

One of Logan’s reason for leaving the GOP is because she felt that Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera pressured her to support an anti-immigration law back in 2011, especially citing hostility towards Hispanics as a reason for her departure, saying that the Republican Party is “a party that attacks women and minorities — and one that asked me, and my former Hispanic Republican colleagues in the Florida legislature, to turn on their own people by supporting extreme anti-immigrant policies.”

She tweeted that she was “proud to be a member of a compassionate party. Today I became a Democrat!”

According to the Miami Herald, Rivas Logan won her seat in 2010, but lost her 2012 reelection after redistricting pitted her against an incumbent Republican. Carlos Curbelo, a Republican candidate running for Congress, believes that Rivas Logan changed parties in order to have better election chances in the future, should she run again. A state law bars her from running for office for one year after she switches parties.

Rivas Logan is not the only person who believes that the Republican party is being “held hostage by a group of extremists.” During an interview with The Tonight Show host Jay Leno last month, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said that there is “nothing I could do that was ever conservative enough for” the Tea Party elements of the Republican Party. Meanwhile, Tea Party darlings like the immigration-restrictionist Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) have perpetuated the argument that the Republican Party would be committing “self-sabotage” if they go ahead with immigration reform.
