Good grief!

New Delhi (CNN) -- At least 11 women have died and 62 were hospitalized after undergoing sterilization surgery at a government-run mobile health clinic in India, authorities said.
Those killed and injured were among more than 80 women who had come to a "camp" for sterilization surgery in Bilaspur district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, said R.K. Vange, chief medical health officer for the area. The women were each paid 1,400 rupees ($23) to undergo the procedure.

Edited to add: I urge everyone to read the full article linked in Chaos' op, which notes that " ... 83 women had the surgery in six hours ...", and the surgeries were performed by just 3 docs ~ :eek

That's 13 minutes/surgery.
My cataract/lens relacement surgery took slightly over 4 minutes.

Damn. Even pets undergoing spaying/neutering get better treatment in most places.

I understand the need for this for population control, but the method is cruel and inhumane.

Seeing as the system is based on piece work they need to implement a penalty that is, say, 10 times the payment for each infection and 100 times for each death.

It's hideously sad, but India isn't the US or Canada. They need to do something to control population,

Also the doctors and hospitals are in squalor.

Mumbai's doctors live subhuman lives in filthy shacks

I'll copy in the link soon.

A lot of that probably depends on caste.
