Mother shot dead by her toddler son as she changes her one-year-old daughter's nappy

Nov 26, 2014 00:02
By Ann Stenhouse

Police say the "horrible, horrible accident" happened when the three-year-old found a loaded semi-automatic weapon in the house.

A young mother was accidentally shot dead by her three-year-old son as she changed her one-year-old daughter’s nappy.

According to Tulsa World, the “horrible, horrible accident,” happened when the toddler found the loaded semi-automatic handgun and fired a shot, hitting 26-year-old Christa Engles in the head at her home in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Her mother and husband also live at the house in Tulsa, but neither was home at the time.

Engles' husband, a truck driver who was on the road, arrived home yesterday evening after hearing about the shooting and was only able to confirm his wife's death by repeatedly calling the hospital.

"The grandmother came in and supposedly found the two children covered in blood," a neighbour told a local television station.

A Tulsa Police sergeant told NBC News that there was a lot of guns in the house.

The boy apparently found the "large-calibre" handgun under the sofa.

"We are prepared to do what we have to do to keep the kid safe - we think this is a horrible, horrible accident," sergeant Dave Walker said.

you have to be in a vegetative state to think that something isn't wrong here.

Yeah but if you take away our guns only the toddlers will have guns. Guns don't kill people, toddlers do. Pass the ammo!

Teacher accidentally shoots herself in the leg in TOILET of primary school
Sep 13, 2014 13:16
By Steve Kelly

Unidentified woman suffered a serious leg injury after the gun accidentally fired and caused the toilet to explode.

A police investigation is under way after a teacher took a gun into a primary school and accidentally shot herself in the leg while in the toilet.

Police said the firearm went off in the staff toilets before lessons at Westbrook Elementary School in Utah, US, began at 8.45am on Thursday. No one else was injured.

The unidentified female teacher, who was licensed to carry a concealed weapon in the state, is believed to have been injured when the gun reportedly shot the toilet, causing it to explode.

It is then thought the bullet and porcelain from the loo struck her lower leg.

School shooting: A teacher accidentally shot herself in the leg

She was in a good condition at hospital, according to the BBC.

"Permit holders are not required to disclose their status as a permit holder, and/or whether they are carrying a weapon or not, to their employer, or in this case, the principal or school district," a spokesman for the Granite School District told the LA Times.

He added that teachers who possess firearms must carry them at all times, including in the toilet.

A substitute replaced the injured teacher and the school remained open after the incident.

Police have launched an investigation into how the gun discharged.

Several US states including Utah allow licensed firearms in primary schools, but education officials are banned from asking teachers if they are carrying guns.

Many states give education districts authority to decide who can carry guns on school grounds.

The incident occurred just eight days after a professor accidentally shot himself in the foot in front of students at Idaho State University.

Is it too much to hope the students might learn from the teachers examples that guns are not a good thing?
