Swimmer Lia Thomas, who became the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I national championship earlier this year, has been nominated for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The 22-year-old athlete was one of 577 graduating student-athletes from Divisions I, II and III to be nominated for the prestigious award, the National Collegiate Athletic Association said Thursday.

Thomas was nominated for the honor by the University of Pennsylvania, from which she graduated in May.

The Woman of the Year award recognizes female student-athletes “who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in their community, in athletics and in academics throughout their college careers.”

Michael Phelps’ trans ex-girlfriend says Olympian’s views on trans athletes felt like ‘slap in the face’

Michael Phelps’ alleged trans ex-girlfriend has called the US Olympic swimmer a “hypocrite” after he waded into the debate over trans athletes.

Phelps, the flipper-footed swimmer who stands at a towering six-foot-four, called for sport to be an “even playing field” before bizarrely comparing being trans to “doping” in a recent CNN interview.

“I believe we all should be comfortable with who we are in our own skin,” he added.

The 36-year-old was grilled on the topic amid a national debate spurred by trans University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lis Thomas’ success.

Yet only recently did Thomas lose to three cis women and a trans man, placing fifth in the women’s 100-yard freestyle at twin dual meets with Yale and Dartmouth.

To Taylor Lianne Chandler, who has claimed she dated Phelps, it’s clear that Phelps “doesn’t fully understand the science, advantages and disadvantages” of being trans.

Judge rules trans girl can rejoin softball team in crucial victory against anti-trans sports ban

An Indiana judge has ruled that a 10-year-old transgender girl can re-join her softball team in spite of a state sports ban.

The girl at the centre of the case, AM, came out as trans aged four. She joined the softball team in 2021, the same year that a court agreed to change her gender marker, and her mother has said it has helped her “come out of her shell” and feel “more at ease in her skin”.

However, on 1 July, a law banning trans people from playing on girls’ and women’s sports teams came into effect in Indiana, ending AM’s involvement in the team.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Indiana filed a lawsuit against the ban in May, and on Tuesday (26 July), a judge granted the girl a preliminary injunction.

This means she will be able to play for the team from August pending further litigation. The ruling applies only to AM, with the law remaining in place for any other trans child in Indiana.

Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' law fuels anti-LGBTQ2S+ hate online

Research that analyzed social media posts finds that hateful references to gays, lesbians and other LGBTQ2S+ people surged online after Florida passed a law that bars instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade.

References to pedophiles and “ grooming ” rose by more than 400 percent in the month after Florida's “Don't Say Gay” measure was approved, according to a report released Wednesday by the Human Rights Campaign, one of the nation's largest LGBTQ2S+ advocacy groups, and the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a nonprofit group that tracks online extremism.

The measure, passed by the Florida Legislature on March 8 and signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on March 28, says school teachers cannot discuss gender identity or sexual orientation with their young students. Supporters have said decisions about talking about sexual orientation should be left to parents, not teachers.

Critics have said the law sends a hateful message about LGBTQ2S+ people.

The researchers who compiled the report found that the 500 most-viewed tweets that mentioned “grooming” were viewed more than 72 million times between January and July.

Influential conservatives drove much of the increase, the researchers found, through their own posts or by liking or forwarding posts from others. They include U.S. Reps. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., and Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and DeSantis' press secretary, Christina Pushaw, who has equated criticism of the bill with pedophilia itself.

But when the children referred to as “Guevedoces” in an isolated village in the Dominican Republic reach puberty, things start to change. They develop muscles, their chests start to grow, and by the age of 12, they sprout testes and a penis.

This extraordinary intersex condition, known medically as “5-alpha-reductase deficiency,” has been documented for a new BBC2 series “Countdown to Life,” which takes a look at how we develop in the womb and how early changes impact us for the rest of our lives. On March 31, the first period bell at Northwest High School in Grand Island, Neb., had just rung when the principal walked into a journalism classroom adorned with punctuation posters to deliver a new rule directly from administrators.

Students, including at least three who were transgender, were ordered to use the names they were given at birth for bylines because using their preferred names was “controversial,” according to a former student who was in the classroom and a lawyer for the Student Press Law Center.

In response, the student journalists dedicated their final issue in June to L.G.B.T.Q. issues, writing two columns on the topic and a news article about the origins of Pride Month. Then, after publication, the school retaliated, said Mike Hiestand, the Student Press Law Center lawyer.

Northwest Public Schools administrators and the superintendent, Jeff Edwards, shut down its newspaper program in June, infuriating student journalists and press freedom advocates who have denounced the move as censorship.

“I think they said that if they can’t stop it, can’t control it, then they’re just going to get rid of it,” Mr. Hiestand said of the school officials.

Craig Watson has spent his life searching for a church that accepts him fully as a gay man. After having left the Baptist church, Mr. Watson thought he had found it within the famously progressive Anglican faith in New Zealand.

Then came what Mr. Watson called a “kick in the guts.” In late July Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury and global leader of the Anglican Church (known in the United States as the Episcopal Church), affirmed as church policy a 1998 statement that rejects “homosexual practice as inconsistent with scripture.”

“We are looking for allies,” Mr. Watson said, “and they are not an ally.”

Divisions over the acceptance of homosexuality have raised doubts about whether the Anglican Church can remain united, a conflict that has played out both on a global level and inside even liberal-leaning countries like New Zealand, where some Anglicans have broken away to preserve traditional teaching.

These tensions have pulled at the Anglican Church, which has 85 million members worldwide, for decades. In 2003, the U.S. Episcopal Church consecrated V.
