I just read the following from Robert Reich:

I appreciate the encouraging words from those of you urging me to run, but I'm way too short, too outspoken, and too unwilling to kiss wealthy posteriors to be a viable candidate.

So I thought I would raise the question: Who would be your preferred candidate in the next U.S. presidential election?

Feel free to mention anyone, even if there is little chance they would run for office and even if they are not a politician.

I do like his views, but in person he comes across as a crotchety curmudgeon. Probably not electable. I also like Liz Warren, and I'm not even that liberal. It must be that the current conservatives are creating a backlash in people like me. Or there is not room for me in their political spectrum.

Warren isn't all that liberal (progressive), actually.

I should have added the rest of what Reich said;

But if Elizabeth Warren remains adamantly opposed to entering the race, and if neither Hillary Clinton nor any other Democratic aspirant is willing to talk about the gross misallocation of income, wealth, and power in America -- and advocate resurrecting Glass Steagall and busting up the big banks; opposing trade deals the are killing American workers and boosting corporate profits; making it easier to form unions; limiting CEO pay; raising the minimum wage wage to $15 an hour; raising taxes on the rich to pay for better schools and infrastructure for everyone else; raising the cap on income subject to the payroll tax; and reversing "Citizen's United" and getting big money out of politics -- then I will have to reconsider.

And there's the dilemma in a tea-cup John.

As Gore Vidal pointed out once: The problem with American politics is that we only have one party with two right wings".

I'm bumping this to see if I can get more answers to the question...

Who would be your preferred candidate in the next U.S. presidential election?

Elizabeth Warren is a populist ~ I'm not sure she is a progressive since her focus seems strictly on economic issues ~ I'm thinking the best/most powerful role for her just might be moving into a real leadership role in the Senate [especially now that Harry Reid has announced he's not running next year] ~

I like Martin O'Malley, altho I'm not sure he's ready for "prime time" ~ I also very much like Bernie Sanders ... even knowing he doesn't stand a chance with the general public after declaring himself a "socialist" ~ I respect and admire Robert Reich's mindset, but I think he'd have a very tough time as a candidate ~

I'm curious to see who will run ~ but the only thing I know with absolute certainty is that I will vote for whomever is the eventual Dem candidate over ANY of the GOP/TPers ~

Bernie Sanders would be great... and he's rather "conservative" for a socialist. He's more of a social democrat as in the Scandanavian countries.

It hard to imagine any of these people as electable. Martin O'Malley is probably the most charming of the bunch- good voice, can really work a room, looks you right in the eye and acts like he knows you personally If they are all going to run on the same issues, the Bubba factor will be huge.

Sounds like Dubya.
Problem is looks, charm, etc. don't necessarily translate into a good president whereas an irascible sort could.

I actually like Hillary Clinton for the job. She's liberal enough, smart enough, tough enough, and experienced enough in both domestic and foreign arenas. I hope she is electable enough.

i think she is quite electable. and it is a better year for her than 2008, where she would have won easily if she could have beat Obama.

How's Clinton's health?
She's no spring chicken.

But where does Hillary stand on the things Reich points to? Those are the REAL issues.

I suspect that like Bill, and Obama, she pretty much stands with the Bankers.

They all stand with the bankers. They have since 1776.

My choice would be Jon Huntsman, Jr. But he's not going to run. I think he was the most balanced of the gop contenders last cycle, but he got no play from the right wing media or main stream media. There really isn't anyone that has come out on the Dems side that gets me going.

That's the problem. There doesn't seem to be anyone in the crop likely to run from either side, other than Hilary or Jeb Bush, that's both capable and electable. They are the only two centrists. The rest are either too far right or too far left. Joe Biden is centrist and capable but he's not electable.

If you see Jeb Bush as "centrist", jim, you're not paying attention ~ he wasn't "centrist" as governor, and he's moved much further right since then ~

Nor is Hillary. She's pretty far to the right as well.

But then a genuine "centrist" in the US would be considered a crazy, left wing lunatic.

I thought Jon Huntsman was a solid candidate ~ his problem was timing as much as anything else ~ he chose to run during the GOP's hard right turn ~

Robert Reich:
Quote:
A few years ago, it was hard to get a discussion going about inequality. Now everyone who's interested in running for president is talking about it. But none of them suggests a solution polls show is favored by most Americans: Raise taxes on the rich and redistribute the wealth. (In a Gallup poll a majority even said government should redistribute wealth with “heavy taxes” on the rich.)

Unsurprisingly, none of the current Republican presidential aspirants has suggested raising taxes on the rich. But nor, for that matter, has Hillary Clinton. She hasn’t declared her candidacy yet; that’s supposed to be coming in a few weeks. Hopefully, when she does declare she’ll call for raising taxes on the rich -- as well as capping the deductibility of CEO pay, resurrecting Glass-Steagall, busting up the biggest banks on Wall Street, blocking the Trans Pacific Partnership, and getting big money out of politics.

What do you think she’ll say about remedying inequality?

....but to a man (or woman) they will advocate raising taxes on the poor while they lower taxes on the rich. It's called the flat tax and Righties love it and will continue to love it right up to the point where their taxes go up because of it.
