I've been saying this a lot lately.

While that is true to a large degree, it's also true that politicians platforms are abandoned after an election. One may vote for a politician because they love their platform of equality, then the politician votes for a law to discriminate one group or another.

However, we currently have politicians calling for discrimination and yet getting elected.

Yeah. That's the scary part.

Part of the problem is we don't vote for candidates or platforms. We vote for "the big idea" be it "get government out of the way" or "Obamacare steals our freedoms", etc. People don't think things through. It's like the Tea Party hag I read interviewed about Paul Ryan's first budget proposal. She was all in favor of getting the government out of healthcare until the interviewer mentioned he was also talking about slashing Medicare. Her response was "Oh! I don't want to lose my Medicare."
