I don't support the death penalty and I don't believe it serves to stop others from committing heinous crimes ~ Tsarnaev is now sentenced but it could be decades before he exhausts the appeals process unless he waives the process [which is highly unusual] ~ Sooz

GUILTY: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Sentenced to Death
Jesse Berney / May 15, 2015

Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was sentenced to death Friday after weeks of testimony in the sentencing phase of his trial. Family members from his native region, Dagestan, were among those who testified on his behalf.

Attorneys for Tsarnaev argued that he didn’t deserve the death penalty because he acted under the strong influence of his brother, Tamerlan, who died as the brothers were evading police. Only three jurors found his brother’s influence to be a mitigating factor in rendering his sentence, but chose to vote in favor of sending the 21 year old to death row.

A death sentence required a unanimous decision by the jury.

Tsarnaev was found guilty of 30 counts in all, 17 of which made him eligible for the death penalty on April 8. He and his brother killed three people and injured more than 250 others when they set off improvised explosive devices during the 2013 Boston Marathon.

Supreme Court rethinks Boston marathon bomber’s death penalty verdict
By BRIAN NIEMIETZ

The U.S. Supreme Court is considering reinstating the death penalty handed to Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, whose actions led to the death of three people and more than 260 injuries in 2013.

Conservative justices seemed to find favor with the Biden administration’s argument Wednesday that the Boston federal appeals court which vacated the 28-year-old convict’s sentence last year did so in error. That court had ruled evidence was withheld showing Tsarnaev was heavily influenced by his older brother, who died in the aftermath of the deadly attack at the world famous race’s finish line.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was driven over by his younger brother, then 19, after being ...
