The next boycott?

Three parents whose young children were killed in a school shooting in 2012 have sued right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones for defamation.

Mr Jones has long claimed on his radio show and InfoWars website that the Sandy Hook Elementary school attack was "completely fake" and a "giant hoax".

Twenty children - all under the age of seven - and six adults were killed.

Mr Jones has implied that the parents are actors seeking to undermine laws allowing private gun ownership.

Leonard Pozner and Veronique De La Rosa, whose son Noah Pozner was one of those killed by a gunman, filed their lawsuit in Travis County, Texas, where Mr Jones lives and works.

"It's a conspiracy, I tell you! A conspiracy! It's all a plot to undermine a good loyal conservative. (Tears start flowing. A chair flies through the air. Fists pound desk) We try so hard and all we get is stabbed in the back! Is there no place in this world for a real American anymore?"

I hope they win, but I worry.

Can he claim "It's just entertainment!" and get away with it? Plus, who knows what kind of BS he's going to start flinging in their direction now?

Alex Jones Loses by Default in Sandy Hook Defamation Lawsuits
A Texas judge ruled that Mr. Jones “failed to comply” with his obligations to produce information in two lawsuits brought by parents of children who died in the 2012 school shooting.

By Christine Hauser

Alex Jones, the Infowars founder and conspiracy theorist who claimed that the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012 was a hoax, has lost two defamation lawsuits filed in Texas by victims’ families because he failed to provide requested information to the court, filings show.

Judge Maya Guerra Gamble issued the rulings on Monday in the Civil District Court of Travis County. They were made public on Thursday, HuffPost reported. A lawyer for the parents of children killed in the attack, Mark D. Bankston, provided copies of the filings to The New York Times on Friday.

The defendants, including Mr. Jones and his digital channel, Infowars, had made “persistent discovery abuses” by failing to turn over documents as required and by ...

Since he gets paid by the word Jones' lawyer was much more descriptive in his description of the judges comments but, from the sounds of them, they boiled down to "oh shit!" I get the impression they really thought they would be able to stall the whole thing out.

Alex Jones cries foul after court rules he must pay for his Sandy Hook conspiracy theories
Alex Jones says judge "crucified" First Amendment by ruling against him in defamation suits

By JON SKOLNIK

Far-right radio host Alex Jones on Thursday claimed that the First Amendment was "crucified" because of three rulings that hold Jones responsible for defaming the families of children who were killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting.

The decision, first reported by The Huffington Post, effectively resolves three years-long lawsuits filed by the parents of the victims, who claimed damages as a result of Jones' baseless allegations that the tragedy was a "hoax"' coordinated by opponents of the Second Amendment. Judge Maya Guerra Gamble on Thursday issued default judgments against Jones for ...

A Connecticut judge ruled Alex Jones was liable by default, granting a sweeping victory for the parents suing the far-right broadcaster for defamation over the Sandy Hook shooting.

Correction: Earlier versions of this post and article referred imprecisely to a judge’s ruling against Alex Jones in a defamation case. The judge found him liable by default, not guilty by default. We've updated this post.

Alex Jones Liable by Default in All Sandy Hook Defamation Suits
A Connecticut judge’s ruling combines with decisions in Texas to grant a clean sweep for families of shooting victims in their cases against the Infowars host.

Elizabeth Williamson

A superior court in Connecticut granted a sweeping victory to the families of eight people killed in a 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., suing the far-right broadcaster and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his Infowars media outlet for defamation.

The judge in Connecticut ruled on Monday that because Mr. Jones refused to turn over documents ordered by the courts, including financial records, he was liable by default. The ruling combines with three previous rulings in Texas to grant the families of 10 Sandy Hook shooting victims four victories in four defamation lawsuits against Mr. Jones.

Mr. Jones for years spread bogus theories that the shooting that killed 20 first graders and six educators was a government-led plot to confiscate Americans’ firearms and that the victims’ families were “actors” in the scheme.

The Sandy Hook families maintain that Mr. Jones profited from spreading lies about ...

Sandy Hook families seek Alex Jones arrest after 2nd no-show
Dave Collins

Lawyers for relatives of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims asked a Connecticut judge again Friday to order the arrest of Infowars host Alex Jones, after he defied a court order to attend a deposition as part of a lawsuit over his calling the massacre a hoax.

Jones missed both days of a scheduled deposition Wednesday and Thursday in Austin, Texas, home to Jones and Infowars. He cited a health problem that included vertigo and revealed Friday that it was a sinus infection. After he didn't show up Wednesday on the advice of his doctors, Connecticut Judge Barbara Bellis ordered him to appear Thursday, noting he wasn't hospitalized and had appeared in-person on his show Tuesday.

Bellis did not immediately rule on the new arrest request. She rejected a similar motion by the families' lawyer seeking an arrest order after ...

Families of children killed in Sandy Hook massacre reject Alex Jones’ offer to settle defamation case
JESSICA SCHLADEBECK

The families of the children killed in the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School have rejected a settlement offer from “InfoWars” host Alex Jones, who was hit with allegations of defamation after he claimed the brutal massacre never actually happened.

Attorneys for the far-right internet personality on Tuesday offered to pay $120,000 each to the 13 plaintiffs who sued him over his phony claims about the shooting at the elementary school in Newtown, Conn. A total of 26 people were killed, including six educators and 20 first graders between the ages of six and seven years old.

“Mr. Jones extends his heartfelt apology for any distress his remarks caused,” according to court documents.

After the shooting, the families of eight of the victims and an FBI agent who responded to the school filed a lawsuit against Jones — one of several brought against the conspiracy theorist over his false claims about the deadly incident. They swiftly rejected his settlement Tuesday, citing the ongoing harassment and death threats they received from Jones’ followers after he promoted the hoax theory on his widely-watched internet show.

Jones repeatedly claimed no such massacre occurred and that crisis actors were used to further the shooting story. He has since said believes the incident did in fact happen.

Lawyers for the families called the offer a “transparent and desperate attempt by Alex Jones to ...

Alex Jones faces $25K/day fine for contempt after skipping Sandy Hook depositions

By Kathryn Mannie

Infowars host Alex Jones was found in contempt of court Wednesday for failing to show up to his deposition in a defamation lawsuit filed by the families of those who were killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

The Connecticut judge who handed down the ruling, Barbara Bellis, said Jones will be fined $25,000 per weekday until he has sat for two days of depositions. The penalty will begin Friday and will increase by $25,000 for each successive weekday Jones does not appear for his depositions.

Jones was due to be deposed last week on March 23 and 24 but failed to show up, claiming ...

Considering lawyers' schedules and the problem of getting them in the same place at the same time, Jones could rack-up quite a fine before he finally gets deposed. He's probably prefer the jail time.

Sandy Hook lawsuits against Alex Jones on track to resume
The Sandy Hook families’ lawsuits against Infowars host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones for calling the 2012 Newtown school shooting in Connecticut a hoax appear poised to resume soon

The Associated Press

The Sandy Hook families' lawsuits against Infowars host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones for calling the 2012 Newtown school shooting a hoax appear poised to resume soon, based on agreements revealed Friday in the bankruptcy cases of some of Jones' companies.

The bankruptcy filings of Infowars, Prison Planet TV and IW Health last month delayed the lawsuits filed in Texas and Connecticut. Jones has already lost the defamation lawsuits, and the filings came a week before a jury in Texas was set to begin considering how much money Jones should pay the families of victims in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

On Friday, lawyers in the bankruptcy case said the families will be removed as creditors, and Infowars and Prison Planet TV will be removed as defendants in the Texas and Connecticut defamation cases.

The state cases would then continue against Jones and his largest money-making company, Free Speech Systems, neither of which filed for bankruptcy. It was not immediately clear when those cases will resume.

The lawyers' comments came during a hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Texas. Kyung Lee, a lawyer for Jones' companies, said the bankruptcy case will continue because they have other creditors.

A hearing, however, remains scheduled for May 27 on whether the bankruptcy case should be dismissed. The Sandy Hook families have questioned the legitimacy of the filings, saying they were meant only to delay the defamation lawsuits — claims Jones' lawyers deny.

The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, killed 20 children and six educators.

The families of eight of the victims and an FBI agent who responded to school sued Jones, Infowars and others, saying they have been subjected to harassment and death threats from Jones’ followers because of the hoax conspiracy. Jones has since said he believes the shooting did occur.

Alex Jones' Sandy Hook defamation trial set to finally begin in Texas
The trial comes after months of delays. Jones has racked up fines for ignoring court orders and he put Infowars into bankruptcy protection just before the trial was originally set to start in April.

By The Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas — Jury selection is set for Monday in a trial that will determine for the first time how much Infowars host Alex Jones must pay Sandy Hook Elementary School parents for falsely telling his audience that the deadliest classroom shooting in U.S. history was a hoax.

The trial in Austin, Texas — where the conspiracy theorist lives and broadcasts his show — follows months of delays. Jones has racked up fines for ignoring court orders and he put Infowars into bankruptcy protection just before the trial was originally set to start in April.

At stake for Jones is another potentially major financial blow that could put his constellation of conspiracy peddling businesses into deeper jeopardy. He has already been banned from YouTube, Facebook and Spotify over violating hate-speech policies.

The trial involving the parents of two Sandy Hook families is only the start for Jones; damages have yet to be awarded in separate defamation cases for other families of the 2012 massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.

The lawsuits do not ask jurors to ...

Sympathetic portrayal of Alex Jones rebuked as 'hypocrisy'
Jim Vertuno

A producer for conspiracy theorist Alex Jones's media company tried to paint a sympathetic portrait of him Thursday as a jury decides how much in financial damages he should pay for his past claims that the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school was a hoax -- a move that lawyers for parents of a child slain in the massacre immediately rebuked as hypocritical.
Daria Karpova, a producer at Jones' Austin, Texas-based Infowars website, testified that that ...
