My initial reaction is relief ~ :o ~ this is not all that surprising when we factor in the non-existent trustworthiness of BOTH of them ~

Here is Steve Benen's take which, not surprisingly, I agree with ~ some "live links" in original ~ Sooz

On North Korea, Trump should’ve looked before he leaped
05/24/18 09:20 AM
By Steve Benen

Before the leaders of two adversarial nations sit down for sensitive negotiations, the diplomatic legwork is generally exhaustive. Key areas of discussion are addressed in detail long before talks are even announced.

Which made it all the more bizarre when South Korean officials told Donald Trump that North Korea’s Kim Jong-un wanted a face-to-face chat, and the American president quickly accepted without any planning or forethought.

CNN had a report yesterday that suggests it’s dawning on some U.S. officials that the president’s approach – leaping, then looking – may have been unwise.

Quote:
The Trump administration wants additional high-level talks with North Korea and assurances from Kim Jong Un that he is committed to giving up his nuclear program before next month’s planned historic summit in order for the meeting to go ahead, a senior administration official involved in planning for the talks told CNN.

“We need to have more conversations about what we would be talking about before we know if this is going to be useful,” the official said.

Yes. Exactly. Read that quote again: “We need to have more conversations about what we would be talking about before we know if this is going to be useful.”

That’s what a sensible president would’ve said to his team before announcing bilateral talks with the dictator of a rogue nuclear state.

So why didn’t Trump ask the right questions before agreeing to the talks? As it turns out, we have a pretty good idea what the answer is to that question.

The Associated Press reported this week, “Going into the North Korea meeting, senior administration officials say, the president has been almost singularly focused on the pageantry of the summit – including the suspenseful roll-out of details. He has not been deeply engaged in briefing materials on North Korea’s nuclear program, said three people with knowledge of the White House efforts.”

This is consistent with multiple recent reports about the Republican’s refusal to do substantive work ahead of the scheduled negotiations. Trump has instead been preoccupied with the summit’s “pageantry.” This is a president who cares about optics. And commemorative coins. And adoring fans chanting, “Nobel!” at campaign rallies.

It apparently never occurred to him to have meaningful conversations about what he would be talking about before he knew if this was going to be useful.

I could say what a circus this administration led by trump is, but at least in a circus there is some entertainment to be had - in this one - only mind-boggling ineptness which at times can become scary as hell. That said, not so sure the meeting being cancelled is a bad thing.

What's that gurgling sound - oh, it's just Grabem's hopes for a Nobel prize going down the drain.

Don't worry, I'm sure he's already ordered Junior to get a fake Nobel prize to hang on the wall next to his fake Time covers at his golf clubs.

Trump cancels summit with Kim Jong-un

President Trump announced the cancellation of his scheduled June 12 summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in a letter released this morning by the White House.

Between the lines: This had been billed as an unprecedented and historic summit, and a chance for a long-sought breakthrough with North Korea. Kim Jong-un had threatened to cancel it, and now President Trump has done it. He's saying he's open to meeting in future, but only on his terms. Markets fell sharply on the news, and tensions with Pyongyang are likely to ratchet up — and quickly.

    * The letter came hours after a statement from Choe Son-hui, North Korea's vice minister of foreign affairs, threatening to cancel the summit and calling Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy." Despite the increase in tensions, North Korea went ahead with the destruction of its nuclear test site overnight.

    * Trump has since said the military is "ready if necessary", but he doesn't want to close the door on talks.

    * South Korea initially took the lead on talks with North Korea, and already had a presidential summit with Kim. Seoul has even more to lose from a breakdown in relations than the U.S., and appeared caught off guard by Trump's letter.

    * Our thought bubble, from Axios' Jonathan Swan: Beyond the very serious geopolitical stakes, this move is pure Trump. A theatrical withdrawal from a potential “deal," and reminder to Americans that he milked his adversary and gave them nothing in return. He thanks them for the release of the American hostages, reminiscent of how Trump used to privately gloat to business associates that he’d really taken somebody for a ride on a deal.

How it happened: A White House official familiar with direct knowledge of the internal deliberations tells Swan: “People are focusing too much on the 'dummy' part of the North Koreans’ statement. They literally threatened nuclear war. This is a smart move by POTUS: no summit will work under these circumstances. When they’re literally threatening our people.”

    * Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also said North Korea failed to respond to requests from the U.S. to discuss the logistics of the summit, and the North Koreans reportedly skipped a planning session in Singapore earlier this month.

What to watch: Pompeo is testifying this morning before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He began by reading Trump's letter aloud.

Don't agree with Benen on this one. IMO, the was never going to be a meeting. It was simply more Trump bullshyte to distract the masses.
IMO, S. Korea and N. Korea should proceed with talks without Murrica.

Esp. considering US history in the use of nukes. IMO, that was a direct threat.

Yep.

"We still out-gun you" probably isn't the best thing to say to someone who you want to stop buying more guns ...

I hear there's a book out called, "The Art of the Deal".
Considering Trump has failed at every single deal so far....

In the past couple of weeks the U.S. and South Korea have held massive military excercises with the clear intention of trying to intimidate NK. Then the dummy mouths off and starts threatening the "Libyan" outcome. Now they're whining because Kim told them to go fuck themselves. He's threatening them! Give me a break!

Seth Meyers nails this ~ :st ~ Sooz

CHESS MASTER
Seth Meyers Slams Trump’s Embarrassing North Korea Fail: ‘He Had No Idea What He Was Doing’
The ‘Late Night’ host said Trump’s diplomatic failure ‘shouldn’t surprise anyone.’
Matt Wilstein / 05.24.18 9:32 PM ET

The big summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un is off. And Late Night host Seth Meyers is not surprised.

“President Trump has spent weeks hyping his upcoming summit with North Korea,” Meyers said Thursday night. “He’s earned glowing praise from the media, chants of ‘Nobel’ from his crowds, and his government even made a commemorative coin to mark the occasion.”

Meyers actually purchased one of those coins only to find out that Trump had canceled what would have been a historic diplomatic meeting. And he acknowledged that was probably a mistake.

[Video accessible via the end link or at https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_cont ... a6irhXRudo]

“I should have learned my lesson after I bought commemorative coins for the completed border wall, biggest inauguration ever, Anthony Scaramucci’s first 100 days on the job, cleared of all charges, and People’s Sexiest Man Alive,” he joked.

The host went on to say that the decision to cancel the meeting “shouldn’t surprise anyone” given that the president received “backslaps from the media desperate to praise him for something, but repeatedly made clear he had no idea what he was doing.”

After showing a clip of Trump urging North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons during remarks at the White House earlier on Thursday, Meyers concluded, “Once again, Donald Trump is a teenager who didn’t prepare his oral report and is now stalling for the bell to ring.”

I think Trump is backing off because South Korea made it clear they were going to pursue a relationship with the North with or without the U.S. It would really suck if Moon or Kim got his Nobel prize.

Or both... and it wouldn't "suck" at all.

Nobody has had to make America look ridiculous for the past year and change. It's leadership has done it for them.
