Epstein, politically connected billionaire, faces sex trafficking charges

[Video, The Rachel Maddow Show, 3/20/19, 9:43 PM ET, "New reporting bolsters case Epstein prosecutors misled judge", accessible via the end link.]

Jeffrey Epstein, a politically connected billionaire, was accused of sexually abusing dozens of teenage girls in the early 2000s. A federal criminal investigation into his alleged activities raised the prospect of Epstein spending the rest of his life behind bars, but his high-profile legal team – which featured Alan Dershowitz and Ken Starr – was able to strike a plea deal.

As regular readers know, the agreement was indefensibly generous. Epstein pleaded guilty to a state charge of soliciting sex from a minor in 2008, which led to an 18-month sentence. He was ultimately released after 13 months – during which time he had been permitted to leave the prison and go to work during much of the day – and then went back to living the high life.

As recently as a week ago, the Justice Department insisted in a court filing that there’s no reason to invalidate Epstein’s non-prosecution agreement – which was engineered at the time by Alex Acosta, who now serves as Donald Trump’s Labor secretary. At that point, Epstein was probably feeling pretty good about his future.

That changed over the weekend, when Epstein was arrested in connection with federal sex trafficking allegations as part of a joint NYPD and FBI investigation.

Quote:
The arrest stems from incidents spanning from 2002 to 2005, three law enforcement officials said…. [A] senior law enforcement official briefed on the case says that Epstein is expected to face two federal charges for “dozens” of victims.

The official says, Epstein allegedly paid minors cash for massages and then sex acts. He would then allegedly pay those alleged victims even more money to bring him their friends/others who he would also allegedly pay for acts.

The official says that some victims are as young as 14 years old. These acts allegedly occurred at his Upper East Side and Palm Beach, Florida homes.

By all accounts, Epstein was taken into custody in New Jersey and will be arraigned in a federal court in New York later today.

There are all kinds of relevant questions about how the process will unfold, and legal experts can speak to the developments with authority I lack. That said, it’s worth taking a moment to acknowledge just how important the Miami Herald’s reporting has been in shining a light on the allegations surrounding Epstein. Great journalism often produces dramatic results, and it’s likely Epstein wouldn’t be in custody now were it not for the newspaper’s investigative work.

As for the political implications, I’m still not sure why Acosta hasn’t been forced to resign from the president’s cabinet.

My understanding is that the original case was tainted as there was video evidence that was obtained without a warrant that was quashed.

‘Huh?’ Legal experts stunned after Bill Barr decides not to recuse himself from current Jeffrey Epstein case
Published on July 9, 2019 / By Eric W. Dolan

U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr does not plan to recuse himself from the current investigation into multi-millionaire and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to sources who spoke to CNN and Fox News.

A Department of Justice official told CNN on Tuesday that “Bill Barr has consulted with career ethics officials at DOJ and he will not recuse from current Epstein case.”

Barr, however, has recused himself “from any review of the earlier case in Florida,” in which Epstein received a controversial plea deal.

On Monday, Barr was quoted as saying: “I’m recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm I subsequently joined for a period of time.”

CNN legal analyst Elie Honig said Barr’s decision not to recuse himself from the current case was “trouble.”

“I have zero confidence Barr will let this case play out in its natural course if it should start to implicate or do collateral damage to powerful, politically-connected people,” he tweeted.

10:05 AM - Jul 9, 2019

But Walter Shaub Jr., the former the head of the federal Office of Government Ethics, said that it was not necessary for Barr to recuse himself from the current case.

Quote:
Barr’s former firm, Kirkland & Ellis, is a representative of a party in the earlier case under review. That necessitates recusal. But Epstein’s represented by Marc Fernich & Martin Weinberg in the current case, and they’re not with K&E. So recusal is not required in the new one.

I’m only sharing what the rationale of the DOJ ethics officials would have been. I don’t trust Barr further than I can throw his house and would like to see him recused from anything even remotely in Trump’s personal orbit. But such a recuse would be prudential and not mandatory.

No surprise that Barr declined to recuse himself. He's Trump's lapdog and he'll do anything he can to protect his lord and master.

Accused Sex Trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s Political Connections: A Guide
From Donald Trump to Alan Dershowitz, billionaire Jeffrey Epstein is connected to some of the most powerful men in the country — but what did they know?

EJ DICKSON

video at source

On Saturday night, shortly after billionaire Jeffrey Epstein was arrested at Teterboro Airport on charges of sex trafficking and sex trafficking conspiracy, Christine Pelosi, a DNC official and the daughter of Nancy Pelosi, tweeted that the arrest would possibly implicate a number of Epstein’s powerful friends on both sides of the political spectrum — except she didn’t quite put it that way. “It is quite likely that some of our faves are implicated but we must follow the facts and let the chips fall where they may — whether on Republicans or Democrats,” she wrote on Twitter.

Because Epstein is being charged with sex trafficking and sex trafficking conspiracy, with prosecutors alleging that he built a network of girls as young as 14 to satisfy his sexual needs, Pelosi’s phrasing was interpreted as more than a bit flip. But whether they qualify as “faves” or not, it’s certainly true that many prominent political and entertainment figures have deeply entrenched connections to Epstein. By his own admission, Epstein actively cultivated such high-profile friends, telling a New York magazine reporter in 2002, “I invest in people — be it politics or science. It’s what I do.”

To be clear, none of these individuals have faced criminal charges, and they are not implicated in the most recent indictment. Yet on social media, there has been a great deal of speculation as to whether they will be, as well as whether any of them — most notably, current U.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, whose approval of a 2007 sweetheart deal landing Epstein a 13-month prison sentence for sex abuse charges prompted the hashtag #AcostaResign — helped the hedge fund manager and philanthropist avoid facing consequences for his alleged crimes for so long.

The fact that the Epstein case is being handled by the public corruption unit “does beg some questions” as to whether anyone involved in the Trump administration or any other “public officials engaged in business dealings with Epstein” will be implicated in the case, says Duncan Levin, a former federal prosecutor in the Eastern District, tells Rolling Stone. (He has no direct association with this case.) At this point, “we just don’t know” whether anyone else will be implicated at any future point.

Here’s a guide to the famous men who have been linked to him, which we will update throughout our coverage of his case.

Read on ....

“I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy,” Trump told New York Magazine that year for a story headlined “Jeffrey Epstein: International Moneyman of Mystery.” “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”

Jeffrey Epstein sought to pay off potential witnesses, U.S. prosecutors say
Reuters

Jailed American financier Jeffrey Epstein made payments to two potential witnesses seeking to influence them in the child sex trafficking case against him late last year, prosecutors said late on Friday.

In a filing in Manhattan federal court, prosecutors said Epstein wired a total of $350,000 to the two individuals, who were not named. They said they learned of the payments through records they obtained from a financial institution, which was not identified.

Epstein’s lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Epstein, 66, was arrested on July 6 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, where he had returned on his private plane from Paris. He has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and conspiracy and could face up to 45 years in prison.

According to an indictment, Epstein arranged for girls under the age of 18 to perform nude “massages” and other sex acts for him in his New York and Florida homes, and paid some girls to recruit others, from at least 2002 to 2005.

Epstein had faced similar charges in 2007, but negotiated a deal to avoid federal prosecution and plead guilty to a single Florida state prostitution charge.

In a court filing on Thursday, Epstein asked to be allowed to await trial under house arrest in his Manhattan mansion, offering to pay for private armed security.

In Friday’s filing, however, prosecutors called Epstein “unrepentant and unreformed” and said his payments to possible witnesses, along with the risk he would use his wealth to flee the country, warranted keeping him behind bars.

Prosecutors said Epstein paid $100,000 in November to a person identified in his 2007 non-prosecution agreement as a possible co-conspirator. They said he paid $250,000 in December to another person identified in the agreement as a possible co-conspirator and employee.

The payments were made shortly after the Miami Herald began publishing a series of articles about Epstein, who was known for socializing with politicians and royalty.

“This course of action, and in particular its timing, suggests the defendant was attempting to further influence co-conspirators who might provide information against him in light of the recently re-emerging allegations,” the prosecutors said.

A hearing on Epstein’s bail request is scheduled for Monday morning.

Florida reporter drops new bombshell on Epstein while blasting resigning Acosta
written by Tom Boggioni / Raw Story / July 12, 2019

Following the abrupt resignation of Labor Secretary Alex Acosta on Friday morning after being dogged by accusations of giving a sweetheart deal to accused child trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, MSNBC was able to get the Miami Herald reporter whose dogged pursuit of the truth led to the arrest on Epstein again on the phone.

Speaking with host Stephanie Ruhle, the Herald’s Julie K. Brown said she was surprised — but not that surprised.

“I’m surprised it happened this fast,” Brown conceded, before adding, “But, you know, that press conference that he gave the other day didn’t do him any good. Practically everything that he said at that conference was either inaccurate or twisted in some ways to benefit him; to make him look good. In reality, there is nothing here that makes him look good. He dropped the ball on this case.”

She then added, ‘We had been preparing to do a fact-check story tomorrow that would essentially use documents to show everything he said was not true.”

Brown then dropped some new news about Epstein, telling the MSNBC host, “I know for a fact there’s journalists all over the world covering this story now — he [Epstein] had been recruiting in other countries. I’m sure there will be more information coming out not only about his operation, but there were a lot of employees and other people, big people who, if they weren’t involved in the operation, they knew about the operation.”

“It’s time for them to come clean on this,” she added. “I know they were forced to sign nondisclosure agreements. but it is time they step up.”

JEFFREY EPSTEIN: Billionaire, insider, pervert pedo
Brad Hunter

The sweet deals billionaire Jeffrey Epstein cut with prosecutors in New York and Florida seemed bullet-proof against any future probes into his crimes.

He would be free to return to what he loves best.

Molesting and having sex with teenage girls.

But the Miami Herald unearthed a treasure trove of explosive material that has triggered a new round of outrage and the 66-year-old on the hot seat again.

Image

What the Herald uncovered was decades of influence peddling and threats, thinly veiled and otherwise.

Last week, Epstein was charged with child trafficking as a flood of lurid allegations is causing captains of industry, politicians, society mavens, royals and celebs to sweat buckets.

If Epstein goes down this time there is little doubt he’ll point the finger at co-conspirators who enjoyed his filthy favours.

WHO IS JEFFREY EPSTEIN?

Epstein was raised in working-class Brooklyn and from his earliest days showed flashes of genius, skipping two grades.

He initially worked as a math teacher at the prestigious Dalton School in New York during the 1974-75 school year.

Even then, the “casual” Mr. Epstein gave off bad vibes. Creepy. Always ogling his female students. Inappropriate.

“A man with this level of psychopathy, what was he doing in a classroom with young girls?” one of his former students asked a New York Times reporter.

But Epstein quickly decided that teaching wasn’t for him. The big dough was on Wall St.

THE MONEY

“Behind every great fortune lies a great crime.” – Honore de Balzac

Epstein was one of those men who came of age on Wall St. in the mid-1970s and he was quickly labelled a whiz kid.

But on Saturday, the New York Post reported that Epstein’s billions may have been the result of massive fraud, if his mentor is to be believed.

The source of the parks groundskeeper’s son’s wealth has long been a mystery.

Steve Hoffenberg — who served 20 years in jail for the swindle — told The Post that his protege was “in the mix” in the fraud that took 200,000 investors for a whopping $460 million.

“He was my colleague daily, seven days a week,” Hoffenberg said.

A lawsuit launched against the hedge fund king claims Epstein “knowingly and intentionally utilized funds he fraudulently diverted and obtained from this massive Ponzi scheme for his own personal use to support a lavish lifestyle.”

THAT LIFESTYLE

Nothing opens more doors in New York City than dough.

Suddenly, by the 1980s, Epstein had lots of it.

And he also had a new muse: publishing heiress Ghislaine Maxwell, who has been accused of procuring teen girls for Epstein and herself to have sex with.

Maxwell smoothed the Master of Universe’s rough edges, he gave her cash and entree.

With more money than he ever could have possibly imagined, Epstein indulged in his penchant for sex with underage girls.

He also owned properties in New York, Florida and most notoriously, an island in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

CONNECTED

Epstein appeared to be connected to almost everyone who mattered: U.S. President Donald Trump, former president Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew and other political pocket change in multiple jurisdictions.

The smaller players would be the ones who wouldn’t prosecute the pedophile (Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance); downgrade the level of his sex offender status (Vance again); offer up a sweetheart deal that saw Epstein serve just 13 months (now disgraced Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta), and countless others.

Image
From left, Prince Andrew, one of Epstein’s underage sex slaves Virginia Roberts and his alleged procurer, socialite Ghislaine Maxwell.

HIS PENCHANT

Epstein seemed obsessed with sex with young women and underage girls.

His private island in the Caribbean where the girls would fly was called Pedophile Island, his private jet that would zip them to his bed was the Lolita Express.

He paid a crew of attractive young women to recruit playmates for him from all over the world.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Epstein’s legal eagles are trying to weasel him out of what they consider draconian bail conditions.

Meanwhile, the New York Post reported Sunday that the filthy financier used Victoria’s Secret as his own private cathouse.

“Over the years, it seems Epstein relied on …[the] modelling business to source underage girls for sex,” writes Conchita Sarnoff, an investigative reporter, in her book Trafficking.

Hovering in the background at the lingerie company’s parties was Epstein muse and protector Ghislaine Maxwell.

Image

“Ghislaine acted as a kind of Nazi guard, telling everyone where they were sitting in the audience and that she had new ‘pop tarts’ which is what she called the young models.”

If these allegations are true then the US has a huge problem. The entire system of government, law and justice is corrupt from top to bottom regardless of political party.

EPSTEIN ALLEGATIONS: Billionaire perv's 'Number One girl'
Brad Hunter

Image
Prince Andrew with one of the Epstein's victims, Virginia Roberts.
Jane Doe 103 allegedly recruited Roberts.

She was 16 and a student at a Palm Beach high school.

She is “Jane Doe 103,” and she was billionaire pervert Jeffrey Epstein’s “Number One girl.”

According to The Smoking Gun, the teen was recruited through the financier’s twisted bounty program.

He would pay teen girls attending posh Royal Palm Beach High School to recruit more girls for him. The school was a sick smorgasbord for Epstein, 66.

A classmate working at a mall allegedly offered Jane Doe 103 a proposition: She could earn $200 for giving Epstein a massage at his Palm Beach mansion.

And she would have to be naked. Her classmate would pocket a $200 finder’s fee, according to The Smoking Gun.

The go-between, named Haley Robson, later told cops she went to the Palm Beach mansion “numerous times.”

Epstein allegedly made use a vibrator on herself while he masturbated.

Robson later compared herself to headline-grabbing Hollywood hooker, Heidi Fleiss.

“They were told they would provide a massage, possibly naked, and some touching,” she reportedly told detectives.

Among the alleged victims was a 14-year-old girl who earned $300 for massaging the Wall St. weirdo while wearing just a thong.

Robson allegedly told the girl: “The more you do, the more you get paid.”

Jane Doe 103 said when she arrived at the perv’s palace, she was introduced to Sarah Kellen, one of his assistants.

After that, Doe was a frequent flier at the Florida mansion, visiting “hundreds of times.”

Now 32, she told cops she was the money bags monster’s “Number One girl.”

Witnesses have corroborated the allegations, along with evidence seized by cops. She is in Epstein’s notorious little black book.

Epstein — who served 13 months in a sweetheart deal in a Florida jail — now faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life in prison.

He is accused of sexually abusing three minors, including Jane Doe 103 — two in Palm Beach and one in New York.

Epstein’s indictment alleges he began recruiting girls to engage in sex acts “at least in or about 2002, up to and including in or about 2005.”

Doe allegedly described to Palm Beach cops in intimate detail Epstein’s “egg-shaped” and “deformed” penis.

After a while, the situation “escalated” when the hedge fund king introduced his “sex slave” Nada Marcinkova into the mix and the trio began having threesomes.

Doe claimed strap-on dildos, large rubber penises and other sex toys were part of the assaults. And Epstein began paying her more.

And he allegedly would spend hours watching the two women have intercourse while he masturbated.

Jeffrey Epstein was found injured on the floor of his prison cell: report
Published on July 24, 2019 / By Sarah K. Burris

NBC New York is reporting that accused child rapist and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein was found injured on the floor of his prison cell Wednesday.

NBC cited two sources saying that the injuries may have been a suicide attempt. However, a different source told NBC said that the injuries were so minor it could have been an attempt to be sent to a better jail or a fancier prison cell.

Assault also hasn’t been ruled out. There is data that supports claims men accused or convicted of sex crimes with children are the target of violence behind bars. A fourth source said that a former police officer serving time for murder and drugs was questioned about the incident.

Two of the four sources identified the former police officer as Nicholas Tartaglione, who was arrested in Dec. 2016 for killing four men in a drug distribution conspiracy, NBC said citing court documents.

“The attorney for Tartaglione denied all the claims that his client attacked the financier, saying his client and Epstein get along well. The attorney added Epstein was seen today and appears to be fine,” NBC New York reported.

“They are in the same unit and doing well,” said attorney Bruce Barket. He went on to say that any claim that Tartaglione assaulted Epstein “is absolutely not true.”

The report also cited two sources that say Epstein is now on suicide watch inside the jail. The Bureau of Prisons hasn’t responded to requests for further information.

The New World was forgiving. The Old World, not so much.

Ghislaine Maxwell has been called billionaire pervert Jeffrey Epstein’s “pimp” and number one procurer of underage girls.

But before she conjured the 2.0 version of herself, she was daddy’s girl.

“Daddy” was disgraced publishing baron Robert “The Bouncing Czech” Maxwell.

He was a rags to riches story that ended with his drowning death off the Canary Islands on Nov. 5, 1991.

In his wake, he nearly destroyed the Daily Mirror — one of the world’s biggest newspapers — by pillaging its finances and pension fund. The paper has never recovered.

Ghislaine Maxwell fled to Manhattan and away from a British press out for blood.

Here, she would reinvent herself, although as to what, no one was sure.

Any AND ALL all filthy whispers about perverted billionaire Jeffrey Epstein ultimately lead back to Maxwell.

The pair began dating in the early 1990s. He had cash, she had social cache and together they flourished.

But Epstein, 66, wasn’t looking for a sex partner in her early 30s. His thing was young girls. Really young.

Instead, Maxwell became his “best friend”, closest confidant and companion.

As the sickening cesspool around Epstein swirls ever wider, Maxwell is now a target. A number of the fiendish financier’s alleged victims are suing her.

And she has vanished from the Big Apple’s glittering social scene where she made her mark with an exclamation point.

Virginia Roberts Giuffre was just 15 when Maxwell lured her into Epstein’s web. It was the “saucy” Brit socialite who trained her for the billionaire.

“The training started immediately,” Roberts recalled in a video interview with the Miami Herald.

“It was everything down to how to give a ...

Jeffrey Epstein reportedly dies by suicide in NYC jail

How convenient.

American financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was to stand trial on sex-trafficking charges next year, died by suicide overnight at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, according to multiple reports, citing law enforcement officials.

The 66-year-old hedge fund manager was facing multiple federal charges and was denied bail after his arrest in New Jersey on July 6. He pleaded not guilty two days later.

Epstein was accused of orchestrating a sex trafficking ring that delivered underage girls to him and his high-profile acquaintances.

More to come

Jeffrey Epstein, accused sex trafficker, dies by suicide: Officials
21 mins ago / ABC News

Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced millionaire who was facing federal sex trafficking charges, died by suicide Friday night in his Lower Manhattan jail cell, three law enforcement officials told ABC News.

The exact timing and circumstances were not immediately clear.

Epstein, 66, was set to stand trial next year for allegedly sexually abusing dozens of minor girls in New York and Florida.

His death came less than three weeks after he was found unresponsive in his cell at Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan, with marks on his neck that appeared to be self-inflicted, sources told ABC News.

He had been on suicide watch since the July 23 incident.

Epstein was arrested on July 6 for alleged sex trafficking of minor girls at his Upper East Side mansion and his home in Palm Beach, Florida. Some of the charges date back to the early 2000s.

Epstein, 66, pleaded not guilty to the charges. He faced up to 45 years in prison if convicted.

His alleged crimes were thrown back into the spotlight amid renewed scrutiny of the plea deal Epstein reached with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami in 2007, led by then-U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta. A non-prosecution agreement allowed Epstein, a hedge-fund manager, to plead guilty to two state charges and avoid federal charges for an allegedly broad pattern of similar sexual misconduct. He would serve just 13 months of an 18-month sentence in county jail in Florida.

The victims in that case were not made aware of the negotiations for nearly a year after the agreement was signed, according to their attorney.

The deal is currently under review by the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility. Acosta was serving as President Trump's Labor Secretary amid the controversy over his role in the deal. He later resigned from that position.

As long as Epstein was alive a lot of big names were at serious risk. I'm not saying he was murdered but perhaps he was "allowed/encouraged" to commit suicide.
