One that most weren't aware of ...

Air Force crew made an odd stop on a routine trip: Trump’s Scottish resort
Now the layover is part of a broader House inquiry into military spending at and around the Trump property.

By NATASHA BERTRAND and BRYAN BENDER

In early Spring of this year, an Air National Guard crew made a routine trip from the U.S. to Kuwait to deliver supplies.

What wasn’t routine was where the crew stopped along the way: President Donald Trump’s Turnberry resort, about 50 miles outside Glasgow, Scotland.

Since April, the House Oversight Committee has been investigating why the crew on the C-17 military transport plane made the unusual stay — both en route to the Middle East and on the way back — at the luxury waterside resort, according to several people familiar with the incident. But they have yet to receive any answers from the Pentagon.

The inquiry is part of a broader, previously unreported probe into U.S. military expenditures at and around the Trump property in Scotland. According to a letter the panel sent to the Pentagon in June, the military has spent $11 million on fuel at the Prestwick Airport — the closest airport to Trump Turnberry — since October 2017, fuel that would be cheaper if purchased at a U.S. military base. The letter also cites a Guardian report that the airport provided cut-rate rooms and free rounds of golf at Turnberry for U.S. military members.

Taken together, the incidents raise the possibility that the military has helped keep Trump’s Turnberry resort afloat — the property lost $4.5 million in 2017, but revenue went up $3 million in 2018.

“The Defense Department has not produced a single document in this investigation,” said a senior Democratic aide on the oversight panel. “The committee will be forced to consider alternative steps if the Pentagon does not begin complying voluntarily in the coming days.”

The Pentagon, Air Force and White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On previous trips to the Middle East, the C-17 had landed at U.S. air bases such as Ramstein Air Base in Germany or Naval Station Rota in Spain to refuel, according to one person familiar with the trips. Occasionally the plane stopped in the Azores and once in Sigonella, Italy, both of which have U.S. military sites, the person added.

But on this particular trip, the plane landed in Glasgow — a pitstop the five-man crew had never experienced in their dozens of trips to the Middle East. The location lacked a U.S. base and was dozens of miles away from the crew’s overnight lodging at the Turnberry resort.

Had the crew needed to make a stop in the U.K., Lakenheath Air Base is situated nearby in England. The layover might have been cheaper, too: the military gets billed at a higher rate for fuel at commercial airports.

One crew member was so struck by the choice of hotel — markedly different than the Marriotts and Hiltons the 176th maintenance squadron is used to — that he texted someone close to him and told him about the stay, sending a photo and noting that the crew’s per diem allowance wasn’t enough to cover food and drinks at the ritzy resort.

The revelation that an Air Force mission may have helped line the president’s pockets comes days after Vice President Mike Pence was pressed about his decision to stay at Trump’s property in Doonbeg, Ireland, despite its location hundreds of miles away from his meetings in Dublin. The Oversight Committee is also investigating Pence’s stay at the resort.

Accusations that Trump’s properties are unfairly profiting off of his administration have dogged the president since entering office. Ethics officials and lawmakers have raised concerns about foreign officials staying at Trump hotels, and noted that Trump supporters and industry groups regularly throw bashes at Trump-owned locations. Trump is also considering hosting next year’s Group of Seven gathering of world leaders at his Doral resort in Florida, a potential financial boon for the property, and has previously stayed at the Turnberry property.

But the potential involvement of the military takes the issue to a different level.

A senior Air Force official who was previously stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska — where the C-17 crew was based — said choosing to refuel in Glasgow and stay at a posh property a half hour away would be unusual for such a mission. Typically, the official said, air crews stay on a military base while in transit or at nearby lodgings “unless all the hotels are booked or there is a Scottish sheep festival going on.”

The official, who was not aware of the specific allegations, also said that the mid-level officers or senior enlisted airmen commonly responsible for identifying lodging for the personnel are notoriously frugal and try to stay where their government allowance covers the costs.

“Master sergeants are cheap,” he said.

Several weeks after being alerted to the curious overnight stop, the Oversight Committee wrote a letter to acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan asking for documents related to Defense Department expenditures at Trump Turnberry and the nearby Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

The letter, signed by signed by House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), notes that U.S. military expenditures at the airport “appear to have increased substantially since the election.”

Prestwick Airport has long been debt-ridden. The Scottish government bought it in 2013 for £1, but it has continued to lose money in the years since. In June, the government announced its intent to sell the airport, which the panel’s letter described as “integral” to the success of the Turnberry property, 30 miles away.

Because of that, the lawmakers argued that the spending at the airport — in addition to the spending at the Trump property — raises concerns about conflicts of interest and possible violations of the domestic emoluments clause of the Constitution, which prohibits the president from receiving any compensation from the federal government other than his salary. After being elected, Trump chose not to fully divest himself from his business interests, choosing instead to put his holdings in a trust that he can receive money from at any time.

The letter asks the Pentagon for all communications between the Defense and State Departments related to “per diem” allowances in Scotland, as well as “all pre-audit flags related to air crew travel” through the Prestwick Airport and Turnberry resort, “or travel allowances beyond the normal allocations in the Defense Travel System.”

You would think that a President, with even an ounce of ethics, would make it one of his first orders of business that no government business should involve his businesses. There's a saying that applies - well slightly perverted but still apropos: It's not enough to be ethical, one must appear ethical.

Grabem's crooked as a three dollar bill and makes no attempt whatsoever to hide it. And yet his true believers love him for it. It's going to be interesting to see how the GOP tries to reclaim some sort of moral equilibrium when they lose the election. Could you imagine them going bat shit over Clinton getting a blow job after molly coddling Grabem all these years. They'll do it - scream and shout like little girls - but who the heck is going to buy it?

We've all noted the DiC's corruption recognizes NO boundaries ~ the more legit investigations launched in the near future the better ~ we KNOW he will over-react every time and each time deepens the waters for him to drown himself in ~

He can't be corrupt. He's the President. Bound by no law. Just ask him and his pet Attorney General.

Thanks to Mark Sumner's Profile.

Quote:
Donald Trump has been using his position within the U.S. government to enrich himself, and not just by collecting tabs from foreign leaders who stay at his D.C. hotel, or charging the Secret Service half a million in golf cart rental. This week has revealed two stories in which Trump blatantly extracted money from the U.S. treasury and inserted it directly in the ever-open maw of his starving European golf resorts.

The first story came out of Ireland, where Mike Pence was supposed to be meeting with Irish officials in Dublin … only he chose to stay 180 miles away at Trump’s golf resort in Doonbeg. Not only did this meant that every room occupied by Pence, his staff, and the Secret Service was directly connected to Trump’s wallet, it also meant that every time Pence actually wanted to attend the meetings that had supposedly brought him to Ireland, he had to board a military helicopter for a trip that was considerable more expensive than taking a car. Pence asserted that he had stayed at Doonbeg “for security,” even though Dublin contains a little thing called the U.S. Embassy. The housing there proved secure enough for Ronald Reagan when he visited the country, even though that was at a time of considerably more tensions in the Irish capital. Dublin was also secure enough for Joe Biden when he stopped by.

But Pence spending his week at Trump’s Irish resort starts to look like pence when compared to the pounds directed Trump’s way by the other big golf resort scandal of the week.

As Politico reported on Friday, Trump has been using the military to pump money into his failing resort at Turnberry in Scotland. In 2017, that property lost $4.5 million. But that number shot up by $3 million in 2018, not because Trump’s course gained a sudden popularity with Scots or international travelers. But because Trump has been having air crews make an unnecessary overnight stay at his property on trips between the U.S. and Kuwait. Those stops are losing millions for the U.S. … but don’t worry. Trump is finding it.

The House Oversight Committee began looking into what’s going on at Turnberry in April, prompted by an incident in which a C-17 military transport jet stopped there overnight both going and coming from Kuwait. The trip to Kuwait, while long, is not necessarily an overnight affair for military planes any more than it is for commercial airliners. The daily nonstop from New York makes the trip to Kuwait City in just over 12 hours. However, it’s not that unusual for planes on this long run to make a stop, especially since these large transports need refueling.

What is telling is that rerouting the plane for a visit to Turnberry meant fueling at nearby Prestwick Airport, which means paying higher commercial fuel rates for planes that would otherwise touch down and top off at U.S. military bases. Crews on overnight stays have rooms available at the bases, or at discount hotels nearby. Previous trips by the same plane included fueling stops at U.S. bases in Germany or Spain … but definitely not in the U.K., which required a significant change in the plane’s course and resulted in higher costs all around.

That plane was not alone. An $11 million fuel bill from Prestwick indicates that a lot of military planes have been stopping by, and a lot of military personnel have been getting ferried a dozen miles away to Trump’s Turnberry resort. But the U.S. has been getting something for its money. In the form of discount rooms and free rounds of golf.

House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings has written to the military in pursuit of information. So far, the Pentagon has refused to cough up a single document explaining why they’re moving planes to Trump’s Highland Mar-a-lago at a cost to taxpayers. But the idea that Trump is using the military’s budget to keep his drowning golf course afloat seems particularly egregious in light of this week’s announcement that Trump is stealing funds from 127 military projects in order to build a few miles of his border fence.

Even Mitch McConnell has said that he will fight against the $62 million that Trump is taking away from funds that was supposed to build a new school on a Kentucky military base. Perhaps it will make Mitch feel better knowing that Trump isn’t just wasting that money that was meant to help the children of military families on a stupid fence … he’s also simply pocketing it. What’s been spent on unnecessary fuel stops at Prestwick Airport alone would pay for that school five times over. And Trump’s surprise revenue increase at Turnberry looks to be about two middle schools worth.

Trump is misusing funds, at every level, to enrich himself. And in a week where he’s already forced both Homeland Security and NOAA to humiliate themselves in defense of his “Alabama hurricane” screwup, now he’s forcing the Air Force to destroy any semblance of accountability simply over his never ending greed. But hey, there were those free rounds of golf…

And that is Donald Trump in a nutshell for you. Everything’s fair game when it comes to making money. Regardless it’s from us the US taxpayers, who elected him as our president and is basically our employee but that doesn’t stop him though from screwing us over. Just the tought makes it even more pleasurable for him and his twisted and disturbed mind…

GOP Leader on Hotel Scandals: There’s No Difference Between Staying at a Trump Hotel and a Marriott

By Tommy Christopher

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy defended the spending of federal taxpayer dollars at Trump properties by telling reporters that there’s no difference between staying at a Marriott and staying at a Trump hotel.

At the House Republican Leadership press conference Tuesday morning, McCarthy was asked about the recent controversies surrounding government spending at Trump resorts in Scotland and Ireland.

“Do you think that the federal government should be spending money at the President’s resorts, especially when he’s not staying at them?” McCarthy was asked.

“The president’s resorts are hotels that he owns, people are traveling, it’s just like any other hotel, I know people will look at it,” McCarthy said.

“I don’t know that that’s different than anything else,” McCarthy added, and asked “Is it different that if I go and stay or eat at a Marriott here, or eat at the Trump?”

“The president isn’t asking me to, it’s, he’s competing in a private Enterprise, it’s nothing something that he controls in that process, so if it’s in the process, they can stay there,” McCarthy said.

Last week, the administration came under fire when Vice President Mike Pence stayed at a Trump property in Doonbeg, Ireland, which Pence’s chief of staff said was done at President Donald Trump‘s “suggestion.” (Pence’s office later issued a “clarification” that was nor a denial.)

Two House committees are now investigating Pence’s stay.

Then, it was revealed that the House is investigating military expenditures at Trump’s Turnberry resort in Scotland, which the Air Force is also now investigating. Marriott hotels are not owned by any leaders of the free world.

What "if"? He supports Grabem. The answer is in the question.
